MOLDING.

SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 352,360, dated November 9, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JACOB SOHRAM and LoUIs SOHRAM, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Moldings; and we hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

Our improvement relates to the class 'of or namental strips commonly formed, at least as to the bodyor main portion, of wood, though other materials are also employed to produce them, and used for various purposes of ornamentation, among which may be mentioned decoration of rooms and the forming of decorative frames for pictures, mirrors, and the like, or ornamental boxes. It is ourobject to provide a construction of such strips, to which, for want of a better term, we apply the term molding, which shall afford an attractive and useful novelty.

Our invention consists, broadly, in the body portion or base having open ornamental work gilded, or of the more decorative kinds, which take polish.

Though we describe the materials which we commonlyemploy for producing our new molding, we do not, of course, confine ourselves to any particular ones, as obviously various materials may be used for producing the dcsirable result afforded by our improved construction. Thus the part A may be metal or a suitable composition. The open ornamental work B may be molded putty, colored in any desired hue, as onthe specimens shown in the figures of the drawings, which are copied from samples of our improvement, though it may be scroll or any other form of open or namental work, and the interposed strip of fabric 0 may be cloth or paper of any suitable hue, which, being visible through the open-work, produces the desired decorative effect. a We are, however, desirous of expressly confining ourselves to the employment of a suitable fabric in the .position of the Strip G.

We prefer to provide the body or base A with a longitudinal groove or recess, 1', deepened slantingly at its sides, as shown at r in Fig. 3, and to contain the parts 0 and B, and form inclosing lateral edges (1. The strip of fabric Opaper or cloth of the desired hue or patternis secured by gluing it on the base of the recess 1", to cover the base and form the background from which the desired effects are derived, the lateral edges being caused to enter the depressed or deepened portions 1" of the recess 1", where they are also glued, and the ornamental or open work B is mounted upon the fabric 0 and glued in place.

The article thus produced affords molding which-may be made to suit any taste or requirement in decoration by providing the parts A, B, and Oin desired relative hues.

WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

' 1. As a. new article of manufacture, molding comprising, in combination, the body portion A, fabric O, secured upon the body portion, and ornamental open-work B, secured upon the fabric, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, molding comprising, in combination, the body portion A, provided with a longitudinal recess, 7, a strip of fabric, 0, secured in the recess 1, and ornamental open-work B, secured in the recess 1" upon the fabric 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a molding comprising, in combination, the body portion A, provided with a longitudinal recess, r, to afford lateral ledges q, and lateral recesses 1" within the recess 1, a strip of fabric, O, secured within the recesses r and r, to form the ground, and ornamental open-work B, secured upon the fabric 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4.. The combination of the base A, ornamental open-work B, and interposed strip of colored fabric 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
