UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
CHARLES SCHERER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO MAAS, BLUM & OO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
f PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,358, dated November 9, 1886.
Application tiled August 20, 1886. Serial No. 211,377. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHAE'LEs SOHERER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved portfolio for receiving and containing writing-paper, envelopes, blottingro paper, pencils, eraser, 8m., which portfolio is constructed with a stiff hinged frame for forming anon-yielding writing-surface, so that the said portfolio can be used to great advantage by travelers, tourists, 8mo., as the portfolio can be placed on the knee anda stiff writing-surface formed to enable a person to write with ease.
The invention consists in the combination, with a stiff met-al frame formed of two sections 2O hinged together, of a leather, plush, or other covering, forming the outside of the portfolio, and in which pockets for paper, Ste., are formed, all as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an inside face view of my improved portfolio open, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same partly closed.
3o Fig. 3 is a crossseclional view of a modication partly closed. 4 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The two metal frames A, which are hinged 3 5 together at A A', are formed of bent tubular rods provided in the inner edges with slots B', for receiving and holding the edges of the pieces B, of leather, cardboard, or other suitable material, providedvwith corner-pieces O,
4o under which the corners of a blotting-paper sheet, D, can be placed for the purpose of holding said blotting-paper in place on the p pieces B. The pieces B are held rmly and rigidly by the stiff frames A, and form a stiff and rigid writing-surface.
On the outside of one of the pieces the pockets E E, for pencils, pen-holders, erasers, knives, Src., are formed. A flap, G, made of leather, plush, oilecloth, or any other suitable 5o material, is connected with the pieces B at the joints, and is adapted to fold on the outside of one of said pieces of the covering. The covering H is fastened to the outside of the other piece B, and is provided/with a flap or wing,
J, which can be folded over the flap or wing G. Pockets K K, for papers and envelopes, are formed on the inside of the iiap or wing G, and said iiap or wing G and the iiap or wing J are provided with a latch orother fastening device, L, for holding them together when the 6o portfolio is closed. When the said portfoliol is closed, the iiap or wing G rests on the outer surface of that `piece B provided with the pencil and pen pockets, and the flap .I is folded over the flap G, as shown in Fig. 2.
The pockets can be formed on the inner surface of one of the piecesB, held in the frame A in the manner described, and the blottingpaper in the other. No aps are provided in this case, and the parts are held together, when 7o closed, by the tongue or strap O, or, if desired, by a suitable catch or fastening device on the metal frames A.
The outside of the'portfolio can be finished with plush, plain or stamped leather, oil-cloth, or any other desired material.
I am aware thatd there are portfolios provided withpockets for paper, pencils, Sto., and portfolios with pasteboard sheets for forming a writing-surface have been made hereto- 8o fore; but -that I do not claim. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A portfolioponstructed with pockets for receiving paper, pencils, and other writing utensils, and with a stiff frame formed of two parts hinged together, in whichA frame pieces of leather, pasteboard, or other material are held for forming stiff supports for writing-paper, substantially as shown and described. 9o
2. A portfolio constructed with pockets for receiving paper and other writing utensils, and with two frames formed of hollow rods, provided along the inner edges with slots for receiving the edges orpieces of the pasteboard, 9 5 leather, or other material held in said frames and forming writing-surfaces, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres- Ico ence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES SOHEBER.
