Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARSHALL B. RU K, oE "1 REscoTT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF To GEORGE E. BAKER, 0E DAYTON, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
wmoow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,181, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August 24, 1886. Serial No. 211,727. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL B. BURK,
a citizen of-the United States, residing'at Prescott, in the county of Walla Walla and Territory of Washington, have invented. certain new and usefullmprovements in .Windows 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to windows; and the and, comprises the top A, "sill B, and sides B andB. The sides are provided with strips 0, between which the sashes D are fitted. .There may be as many of these sashes as desired, the
number beingimmaterial to the spirit of,,my
invention.
It may be greater or less than that shown, which represents three sashes. They are pivoted by L-angled plates E, "which are secured to the side rails of the sashes, and have the parts E standing at right angles, to the 'plane of the sashes and resting against the inedge of one of the strips 0, and is held from It is located alongside the lateral displacement by keepers G, and has a vertical reciprocating movement. The lower end, which extends within convenient reach, is provided with a handle, 9, aid has a longitudinal slot, f, through which a set-screw, H, is passed and screwed into the frame for fastening the rodat any stage of its movement and holding the sashes at any desired adj ust-' ment. By moving the rod F up or down its teeth f, meshing with the teeth 6 on the sides E of the plates, will move them about their pivots and carry the sashes with them till the required opening is obtained to secure thedesired ventilation. erated by the rod; but as it is desirable oftentimes toopen the lower sash without having the upper ones disturbed, it is-disconnected from the others, so as to be operated independently. It will be observed that the means. plates E-are the same as those used for swing; ing the sashes, and the edge of the side Eis provided with teeth 0, which differ in form from the others; but this departure is only one of taste, and not one affecting the vital point of the improvement. The sash is swung held at any adjustment by a spring-catch, I, secured to the frame, engaging the propertooth on the part E of the plate E. The adjacent.
as to secure a tight or close joint which will exclude the air and dust. The sides of the All the sashes may be op or moved about its pivots by hand, and His sashes are similarly cushioned for a like pur- 'pose.
corners andsa staple atthe bottom for excluding flies, &c., when the sashes are open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, In testimony whereof I affix my signature in is presence of two witnesses The combination of the frame, a series of pivoted sashes, and an operating-rod for actuating MARSHALL B. BURK. 5 the upper sashes of the series, the lower sash being disconnected and independently adj ust Witnesses: able, substantially as and for the purpose de- CIIES F. MILLER, scribed. 11'. N. PRINGLE.
