.To all whom may concern-.- l
Be itknown that I,GnoRGE"GADD OLD- AKER, a subj ect of the QueenofLGreatfBritain, and a resident of London, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Smoothing-Irons, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to the improved construction and combinationof parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Q Figure l isja perspective view of the handle and attachments of an iron embodying my invention, showing position of handle and slug just before inserting and locking same to the box or base of the iron.v Fig. 2'is a perspective view of the box or base of the iron. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vsectional view of the iron in position ready for use.'
A designates a cover placed over-the box B of the iron to retain the heat of the slug E therein, and to protect the hand from the heat of said slug. `Extending upward from ythis cover A are two standards, C C', to which the handle D is secured. Secured to this cover A by a screw-bolt and nut, F, or other suitable securing devices, is a shield, G, to form an ad ditional protectionfor the hand from the heat of the slug E. This shield G not only serves this purpose, butalso forms -a cover for the bearings in, which the pivot-axle H is journaled, on which pivot-axle H the lever I is pivoted.
Jis ai sliding arm, operated alternately by the lever I and. spring L, which sliding arm is held in and slides back and forth perfectly free in a socket, K, in the standard C'.
' L is a spring, formed with an angular end, L. This spring L is secured to the standard C.
The sliding armn J is moved loutward by pressing up the lever I to `disengage the angular end L of the spring L from the notch M formed in the box B at the heel, which permits the handle Dto be raised independent of the box B; The same movement of the lever' Iengages the lower curved end, I', thereof with the bar N, rigidly secured in a beveled slot, E', in the slug E,"so that the same motion of the lever I disengages the handle D from the box Band engages said handle D with-the slug .sei-iai Ndiorno. (No model.)
4slug Eris'ftofretain the lever I inthis ,position and lli'ftthe handleiD-upfrom thebox B. rThe handle takes the slug E with it as itis engaged therewith. Then, by removing the pressure from the lever I, the spring L moves the sliding arm J inward and operates the lever I to draw the curved lower end, I', away from lthe bar N of the slug E, which frees the same from the handle, to be left on the stove to be reheated, or any other place required. The sliding arm J is prevented from ialling out of the socket Kby being formed with an'enlarged head, J, which is held between the standard C and spring L. By placing the handle D over another slug, which has been heating while this one has been in use,'the guides o o slide into the beveled slot E, and readily ad- 7 just the handle in proper position over the slug E, when, by pressing up on the lever I,
as hereinbefore described, the curved end I vof sanie engages with a similar bar N, secured in a similar slot E in this slug E. This movementalso moves the spring L outward. By lifting up on the `handle D, and retaining the lever I in this position, the slug E is raised with it. Then, by inserting the`angular iiange P in a corresponding groove, R, in the upwardly-projecting flange S at the toe of the iron, and lowering the handle until the squareiianges T T are inserted into the recesses U U, to which recesses U U the anges T T are previously tted, the handle is secured to the box B at the toe or frontof the iron. By lowering the handle with the front end engaged as hereinbefore described, the guide V on the box Bat the heel comes opposite and lits into a corre 9 sponding socket, W, in the standard C', and readily guides the handle into place to bring the slug E into the hollow box or base B. Then, by releasing the pressure from the lever I, the spring L moves forward, and the lower angular end, L', thereof engages with the notch M on the heel of the box B. At the same time thelower curved end, I', of the lever is disengaged from the bar N; but the slug E is securely held in place as the handle is firmly ser cured to the box at the toe and heel by the square recesses U U and flanges T T and the spring L and notch lVI, respectively.
Having thus described my invention, what/I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The lever I, sliding arm J, standard C', formed with socket K, standard C, cover A, handle D, and spring L, formed with an angular end, L', in combination with the box B, formed with the notch M, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a smoothingdron, the lever I, formed with a curved end, I', and sliding arm J, in combination with a spring, L, formed with an angular end, L', handle D, box B, formed with notch M, and slug E, formed withva slot, E, and bar N, for the purpose yof disengaging the handlefrom the box and engaging the handle with the slug simultaneously, so that both motions will be made with one movement of the hand, substantially as shown and described.
3. The box B, formed with a guide, V, in combination with the standard C', formed with a socket, W, substantially as shown and dcseribed, and for the purpose specified.
4. The cover A, formed with an angular 25 ange, P, and square flangesT T, in combination with the box B, formed with flange S, in which the angular groove R and square re cesses U U are formed, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specied. 3o
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
GEORGE GADD OLDAKER.
