This invention relates to an improvement in steam-boilers, with special reference to lowpressure boilers-such as used for heating purposes-the object of the invention being to increase the amount of exposed fire-surface,and thereby correspondingly reduce the amount of fuel for a given quantity of steam; and it consists in ahorizontal boiler arranged in achamber above the fire-box,with two or more series of transverse tubes opening through the sides of the boilerinto the chamber surrounding the boiler, and with horizontal partitions in said chambers between the said series of tubes, whereby the products :of combustion pass up around one side of the boiler and back and forth through the alternate series of said tubes,and as more fully hereinafter described,
A represents the boiler, which is preferably of semi-cylindrical shape at the top and bot-' tom, with its sides substantially vertical and parallel. From side to side, transversely through the boiler, series of tubes in horizontal planes are arranged, a representing the tubes of the first series, b the tubes of the second series, and cthe tubes of the third series.
The boiler is set into a chamber, B, over the fire-box O, and so as to leave a space in the chamber around the boiler, as seen in Fig. 2. On one side of the boiler, between the tubesa b, a longitudinal horizontal partition, d, is arranged, which divides the chamber surrounding the boiler on a plane between the first and second series of tubes. ,On the opposite side,
and between the series b and series a of the tubes, is a like partition, e, which in like manner divides that side of the chamber surrounding the boiler between the second and third series. Then, again, on the first side is a third partition, f, like the partitions d 6, above the third series of tubes.
D is the flue for the escape of the products of combustion from the chamber B, the boiler being set in the chamber in the usual manner,
and sothat there is no escape for the products of combustion, except upon that side where is the first partition,d. The draft is to that side beneath the partition d, through the tubes a to the opposite side of the boiler, and in the chamber on that side, the draft turned below' the partition e and through the tubes 12, thence to the firstside of the boiler,where by the partition f the draft is again turned through the third series, 0, and thence escaping, arrows indicating the direction of the draft. Other series of tubes may be added, according, to the size or height of the boiler; but the partition should be continued in like manner between succeeding series, so that the heat will pass in one direction through the lower and return through the next higher of the series, and so on to the final escape through the flue D.
Y At one end of the chamber,which, it will be understood, is made, as usual, of brick, a door or opening, E, is arranged into the chamber on each side of the boiler, one such opening being shown. This opening gives communication to the partitions, so as to permit them to be readily cleaned, and on one side I arrange another door or opening, F, which exposes the open ends of the several series of tubes. This opening is shown in Fig. 2.
In the illustration I have shown the feeds and regulators, such as in common use in boilers of this class, but not material to this invention. r
By the introduction of the several series of tubes with intermediate partitions on opposite sides, I am enabled to pass the products of combustion several times through the boiler, thereby greatly increasing the radiating surface of the boiler,'and to a corresponding extent utilizing the fuel, so that a great economy of fuel for a given amount of steam is the result'of my invention. p
The partitions on each side of the boiler are secured firmly to the boiler, and become substantially a part of it, and are consequently properly located, so that no inconvenience is experienced in setting the boiler because of the introduction of the partitions w I claim-- 1. In a steam-boiler,substantially such as described, two or more series of tubes, each series arranged in horizontal planes transversely across the boiler opening on both sides of the boiler, a chamber surrounding said boiler and into which the fire-box opens, the said series of tubes each opening into the said chamber on opposite sides of the boiler, with longitudinal horizontal partitions in the chamber on each side of the boiler, the partition on one side being between the first two series of tubes and thenext on the opposite side above the second of the series, and so on, substantially as described.
2, The combination ofa steam-boiler having parallel sides, a chamber surrounding said boiler, a fire-box opening into said chamber upon one side of the boiler, two or more series of tubes, each series arranged in a horizontal plane and extending through the boiler from side to side and opening into the said chamber upon opposite sides, longitudinal horizontal partitions on opposite sides of the boiler, the
first partition on one side being between the first and second series of tubes and the next on the opposite side between the second and third, and so on,with a door opening into said chamber and against said partitions, substantially as described.
3. The combination ofa steam-boiler having parallel sides, a chamber surrounding said boiler, a fire box opening into said chamber upon one side of the boiler, two or more series of tubes, each series arranged in a horizontal plane and extending through the boiler from side to side and opening into the said chamber upon opposite sides, longitudinal horizontal partitions on opposite sides of the boiler, the first partition on one side being between the first and second series of tubes and the next on the opposite side between the second and third, and so on, and a door upon one side of 5 the chamber opening to the ends of the tubes, substantially as described.
