SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,244, dated March 31, 1891.

To all whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY BIRKE'rr Boole LAND, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the county "of Northumberland, England, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Steam Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Figures 1 and 2 show one form of boiler, Fig. l being a sectional elevation on C D, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 a plan, partly in section, on line A B, Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 show portions of the fire-box with corrugated inner plates. Figs.
5, 6, 7, S, and 9 are drawn to a smaller scale and show modifications, which will be further referred to hereinafter.
In the above figures like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference.
The shell ay is spherical, truncated at the bottom, which is filled in bya dished plate c, forming the furnace-crown. This plate is flanged to snit a spherical or partly-spherical combustion-chamber Z9, concentric with the shell. The heating-surface of this chamber b may be increased by dividing it into two, three, or four different chambers, as shown in Figs. 6, 2, and 7, respectively, by vertical or other water spaces, or by suspending within it a water-pot with circul'atingtubes, as in Figs. 8 and 9, or close-ended or other tubes. rlhe back plates r1T ofthe coinbustion-chambers are curved, as shown, to resist pressure. The furnace portion of boiler is constructed of an inner and outer shellf, with end plates g, forming acylindrical,square,or other jacketed fire-box, which is connected by pipes to the shell d, either to form a portion of said boiler or a separate feed-Water heater. In the latter case suitable valves are fitted. Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications of this fire-box with corrugated inside platesf. In Fig. 5 the cylindrical fire-box is shown formed with the spherical shell. These furnaces may be modified or adapted for coal, wood, petroleum, or other fuel, or for forced draft either under the bars or through tubes Z into the combustion-chambers, or both.
The tubes Z, which are the lowest tubes leading into the fire-box, have the ai r admitted to them through the pipes L, passing through the smoke-box, and the branch pipes Z.
lVhat I claim is- 1. In a boiler, the combination, with the spherical shell, of thc spherical combustionchamber, the dished furnace-crown, and the radial fire-tubes inclined upwardly and downwardly from a central point and secured between the said combustion chamber and shell, substantially as set forth.
2. In a boiler, the combination, with the spherical shell, of the spherical combustionchamber, the dished furnacecrown, the radial flre-tubcsj, arranged in separate series, and the water spaces, tubes, or legs inside the combustion-chamber with their ends between the series of tubes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a boiler', the combination, with the spherical shell, of the spherical combustionchamber, the dished furnace-crown, the radial fire-tubeSJ-i and the tubes k, connecting the' roc said crown with thel outer Shel is seb forth-'-y 4. 5. In a boiler, the combination, with the spherical shell, of the spherical combustionehamber, the dished furnace-crown, the radial {ire-tubes j, the tubes L, connecting the furnace-crown direet with the outer shell, and the smoke-box inelosing the ends of allthe tubes and divided by a partition n, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
