Ec 5 00 U.S. Cl. 292-66 3 Claims ABSTRACT 0F THE DISCLOSURE A window locking means comprises a rod pivotable about and slidable along an axis parallel to its length and extending along one edge of the window. The rod has a portion that is adapted to engage the window sash and prevent opening thereof. The rod is also pivotable about the said axis to withdraw the aforesaid portion from the path of movement of the sash to permit opening movement of the window. A handle is provided for sliding and then pivoting the rod between its locking and unlocking positions.
This invention relates to means for locking a easement window.
The invention can also be applied to the locking of doors, and in this speciiication, the word window will be used in a broad sense to include a door, particularly a door of a cupboard, cabinet or the like. As will be seen from the following, however, the main application of the invention is in the locking of windows, particularly windows having a pane of glass carried in an extruded aluminium or aluminium alloy frame. The invention may be employed in conjunction with the invention disclosed in my copending U.S. Pat. application No. 725,727 relating to a window hinge assembly.
It is an aim of the invention to provide a construction that is simple to manufacture and assemble, has a small number of separate parts, and provides an eicient and secure lock for the window.
According to the present invention, we provide means for locking a Casement window comprising a rod pivotable about an axis parallel to its length and extending along one edge of the window, the rod having a portion or being attached to a part that is adapted to engage the window sash and prevent opening thereof, the rod also being pivotable about the said axis to withdraw the aforesaid portion or part from the path of movement of the sash to permit opening movement of the window.
The aforesaid portion is preferably constituted by two end portions of the rod that are bent at approximately 90 to the general direction of the remainder of the rod.
The rod may be pivotally moved by handle, and this may have a slot which engages one of the aforesaid end portions of the rod bent at approximately 90 to the length of the rod. The rod may be mounted in a pair of blocks, for example of nylon, and these blocks may be mounted by bolting or other suitable means upon a window frame member. The latter is preferably of extruded section aluminium or aluminium alloy.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof, given with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a window locking means according to one embodiment of the invention,
FIG. 2 is a side elevation view corresponding to FIG. l.
FIG. 3 is an end elevation view corresponding to FIG. 2,
FIG. 4 is a side elevation of the locking rod,
FIG. 5 is a plan view of a bracket for supporting the clench handle,
FIG. 6 is a side elevation View corresponding to FIG. 5,
FIGS. 7 and 8 are, respectively, plan and side elevation views of the handle, and
FIGS. 9 and l0 are, respectively, plan and side elevation views of a block, for example of nylon, which supports the rod.
Referring firstly to FIGS. 1-3, the illustrated window locking means comprises a locking rod 20, for example of 1A diameter stainless steel, supported for pivotable movement by a pair of nylon blocks 22 and 24. These are similar and are illustrated in detail in FIGS. 9 and 10, and include slots and channels commonly designated at 23 and 25, respectively. The nylon blocks 22 and 24 are secured to a window frame member 26 by means of screws 28.
The rod 20 is bent as shown in FIG. 4, with the two end portions 30 and 32 thereof being bent at 90 to the remainder of the rod. The parts 36 and 38 of the rod are supported by the nylon blocks, and, as shown in the detail view of FIG. 4a, the rod has parallel flats provided on each side as indicated by reference numeral 40. The width of the rod between the parallel faces is chosen so as to be snugly received in the left-hand nylon block 28 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The purpose of this will appear later.
The rod is actuated, i.e. pivoted about the common longitudinal axis of its parts 36, 36, by a handle 42 having an opening 43 adapted to receive a pin `45 for pivotally mounting the handle on bracket 44. The bracket is secured to the window frame member 26, which may for example be of extruded aluminium, by screws 46, FIG. 1, which are not shown in FIG. 3 and is formed with a longitudinal slot 47, FIG. 6, for receiving the handle 42. These screws may be advantageously self-tapping screws. The handle and the bracket 44 may be of formed stainless steel sheet.
The handle 42 has a slot 50 therein as shown in FIG. 7, and this is adapted to engage and receive the bent end portion 32 of the rod 20 in certain positions of the handle 42. With the rod 20 in the position shown in FIG. 1, the handle 42 is in the closed position and the bent ends 30, 32 project upwardly into the path of movement followed by the window sash as the window opens. This can be seen from FIG. 3, in which the arrow 52 indicates the opening movement direction of the window sash 54.
The window sash 54 is advantageously an extruded member of aluminium or aluminium alloy, and may ad vantageously be pivotally attached to the window frame by the hinge assembly forming the subject-matter of my above noted co-pending U.S. patent application No. 725,727.
When the handle 42 is rotated in an anticlockwise direction as seen in FIG. 1, it will be realised that the rod 20 is withdrawn, i.e. moved towards the right in FIG. l, and is then pivoted about its own axis due to the aforesaid engagement of the slot Walls with the bent end 32 of the locking rod 20, so that the parallel flats 40 are no longer snugly received by the left-hand nylon block 22.2 Vhen this is done, the end portions, 30, 32 of the rod 20 are pivoted through 90 and take up a position where they do not impede the opening movement of the window sash 54. As seen in FIG. 3, in this movement the end portions 30, 32 roate anticlockwise about the axis of the rod portion 38.
The end portions 30, 32 of the rod 20 have protective sleeve 60, -62 of polyvinyl chloride or like protective synthetic plastics material to prevent undue damage to the ysurface finish of the window sash section 54.
With this construction, it has been found that a very secure locking action is provided, one end of the window sash being held via end portion 32 in the locked position by the handle 42, and the other end of the window sash section being securely held by the end portion 30 whose rotation is further prevented by the co-operation of the parallel flats 40 and the slot in the left-hand nylon block 22.
Tests have been carried out, and with this arrangement a window having window-sash height of up to 4 feet can be held, utilising a rod 20 approximately 2 feet in length, so that it withstands a maximum pressure of 100 lbs. per square foot without any noticeable deflection. A further advantage of the construction specifically disposed herein is that the window cannot be blown open by wind pressure unless the entire assembly is torn from its mountngs.
It will be appreciated that modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. Casement window locking means comprising:
(a) a window frame comprising a plurality of window frame members,
(b) a window sash,
(c) a rod having opposed end portions extending transversely to the remainder of the rod,
(d) means for mounting the rod on one of the said window frame members for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to its length and so that it extends with its length along the said one frame member, and,
(e) handle means pivotally mounted on said one window frame member for pivotal movement in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said window, said handle being provided with a slot for receiving one of said opposite end portions of said rod, the pivoting of said handle rst electing longitudinal movement of said rod and then pivoting of the-same about its own axis into and out of the path of movement of the window sash thereby to effect locking and unlocking of said sash.
2. The locking means of claim 1 wherein said rod is mounted in a pair of blocks each secured to said window frame member.
3. The locking means of claim 2 in which one of said blocks is slotted to snugly receive a part of said rod provided with parallel ats on its sides, said llats being spaced apart a distance less than the maximum lateral dimension of said rod, when said rod is in its locking position.
