J. W. WI'LDER.
MEANS FOR SEALING JARS, 600.
Patented Nov. 2, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONES W. WILDER, OF PARKVILLE, NEW YORK.
MEANS FOR SEALING JARS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,823, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed April 21, 1886. Serial No. 199,705. (No nxodel.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONES W. WILDER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Parkville, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Sealing Milk Bottles, Cans, Jars, &c., of which the following is a description.
The object of my improvement is to provide means for sealing bottlestopper fastening de vices to the sides of bottles with sealing-wax and other similar adhesive substances capable of bearing the impression of a seal, and thereby prevent tampering with the contents of bottles or other vessels.
The invention will first be described, in conncciion with the drawing, and then be specifically set forth in the claims.
In said drawing, G represents a bottle or jar of suitable size, having its mouth closed by means of a cover, A, of metal or other suitable material, provided with a washer, a, of slightly yielding substance, resting upon the edge' of the bottle. Transversely across the top or within the body of the cover is ahollow ridge or groove to receive the bail-wire B. This wire is bent in a curve to increase its resilience at the points b, where it leaves the cover. Its ends are bent at b toward the body of the bottle, to form journals for the side loop of the 0perating-lever O. The ends 0 of said lever are retained in loops formed upon the neck-wire F, that is secured, as usual, under'the neck-band of the bottle. The form given to the middleloop of the operating-lever G is a curve that substantially follows and rests against the bottle when the latter is closed. To secure and seal the lever G in this position is the main object of my invention, and for this purpose I provide the side of the bottle with an indentation or depression, D, of sufficient size to receive the small chain or other connecting substance, E, fastened to the middle of the lever Gand dropping into the indentation or depression D, the indentation or depression D being sufficiently large and deep to receive the said chain or other connectingmaterial, E, and upon which a sufficient amount of sealing-wax or other suitable material may be placed to cover the said chain or other connecting ma terial ,E, or a portion thereof, and also to re ceive the' seal of the shipper or owner upon the wax. The form of the said indentation or depression D may be circular upon the center or middle of the surface of the bottle or jar, near the neck thereof, as shown in the drawing at D, and may be blown into the bottle or jar by the manufacturer, or otherwise.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. A bottle provided with a cavity at its side under its neck-band, in combination with a siopper-fastei'iing having an operating-lever adapted to rest against the side of the bottle near the cavity, and a chain or other device connected to the lever and applicable to the cavity.
2. A bottle having a neclvband, and underand below said neck-band a cavity, in com bination with a stopper-fastening constructed to have its lever rest against the side of the bottle, and a chain or other device connected to the lever and applied to and sealed within the cavity.
