BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,693, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed lVlarch '7, 1899. Serial No. 708,063- (No model.l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Y. BREADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bottle-stopper and extractor; and theobject of the invention is to provide a bottle-stopper with a simple and cheap device for causing the stopper to seal the bottle tightly and to readily extract the stopper when it is desired.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a bottle and neck and having a stopper provided with my improved means for extracting the same. Fig. 2 is a view of a stopper and illustrates the device in position on the stopper ready to be inserted in a bottle-neck. Fig. Sshows a side and an inverted plan view of a stopper and illustrates a way of securing the string to the stopper.
In the drawings, A designates a bottle provided with a neck a.
The stopperb may be made of any suitable material and is provided with a string 0, one end (1 of which in the present instance is passed through the stopper and secured on the bottom thereof by a knot f. The other end 0 of the string is free. A disk or washer g may be inserted between the stopper and the knot f on the end of the string.
The operation is as follows: The string 0 is wound around the stopper 6 from the bottom to the top screw-thread fashion, leaving one end e free. The stopper thus wound with string is placed in the bottle-neck, and, if desired, wax may be poured over same to make a tight closure. To extract the stopper, it is only necessary to grasp the free end 6 of the string and pull, whereupon the string will unwind and so completely loosen the stopper that it will readily come out.
It is obvious that I may use wire or other material in place of string.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the bottle-neck of a stopper normally too small to fill the bottleneck tightly, and a string or wire wound around the stopper so that the stopper and string fill the bottle-neck, whereby the said string or wire serves the double purpose of sealing the bottle in conjunction with the stopper, and of extracting the stopper, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY Y. BREADY.
