No. 351,785. Patent-ed Nov. 2, 18861 [720672 tor 772m asses 6125C UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICES W'ILLIAM JOHN LYND, OF YREKA, CALIFORNIA.
ISPIEAKING AND SINGING DOLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,785, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed February 17,1886. Serial No. 192,311. (No model.)
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J OHN LYND, a resident of Yreka, county of Siskiyou, State of California, haveinvented a new and useful Improved Speaking and Singing Doll; and I hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying draw ings.
My invention consists .in a certain construction and combination or parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed,'forming a device or article by means of which sound from the human voice can be made to appear to proceed from a figure or doll.
The following description fully explains the nature of my said invention and the manner in which I proceed to construct, apply, and operate the same, the accompanying drawings being referred to by figures and letters.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a dolls head, showing a. longitudinal elevation ofa speaking-tube. Fig. 2 is a view showing the application of a speaking-tube to a doll and the manner of operating the same.
In applying the speaking-tube to a doll, I-
. employ a tube of any required length, made of rubber, copper, or other'suitable material. The section of the tube I), inserted in the dolls head a, is made in the form of an ordinary horn or trumpet, the diameter increasing gradually from the point ofjunction c to the flaring mouth of the tube, which is placed near the dolls mouth. The end of the tube which is inserted in the dolls head will be provided with an'inside thread, if it is made of metal, to connect with the end 0 of the outside section of the tube (1, which has a uniform diameter of about oneinch and any required length. The tube 6 extends from the rear. of the dolls head for a suitable distance, to -be applied to the operators or speakers mouth. The free end of the outer section of the tube, whether of rubber or metal, will be provided with a mouth-piece, h, the aperture of which must be of equal diameter with the tube.
To prevent the escape of the sound of the o'perators voice, and to facilitate its delivery in volume, I provide a mouth-cover, f, made of light leather or other suitable stuff, open for the passage of the tube, which is applied vrendered movable by some simple mechanism;
but I prefer that they should be rigid.
When in operation, the operator holds the tube 6 in hand, and through themouth-piece It speaks or sings, shouts or cries, and the sound produced is heard from the mouth of the doll,- which seems to speak, sing, shout, or cry, as the case may be.
- I am aware that tubes have been placed in the heads of figures and extended out to be spoken into at the opposite end and emit the sound from the head of the figure, and I do not claim such, broadly.
Having thusfully described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a doll, of'the section or trumpet-mouthed tube 1;, placed in the head of the doll and opening at its mouth, the tube 6, having the hood or coverffor placing over the operators mouth, the mouth-piece h, and securing cord 9, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
