Description

(No Model.)
, H. O. DEMMING. COMBINED MOUTH AND NOSE PIECE FOR AOOUSTIOAL INSTRUMENTS.
No. 485,055. Patented Aug. 26, 1890.
p72? W128? I [.W'VEWXE dim/way UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRYC. DEMMING, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED MOUTH AND NOSE PIECE FOR ACOUSTICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,055, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed August 6,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. DEMMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin the Mouth Piece for use in Connection with the Phonograph, Graphophone, Phonograph-Graphophone, or other Talking-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and concise description of the invention, which willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
For carrying my invention into effect, I adapt my instrument in the form of an eartrumpet, in which Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a person using my improved mouth-piece; Fig. 2,a longitudinal section of myinvention; and Fig. 3, across-section of it, taken near the line w 00 in Fig. 2.
The body of my invention has therein an enlarged cavity M, made in conical form,
which diminishes inwardly to a point P, where cavity M is made to coalesce or conform to the cavity N, near a spherical bulb Q, from which bulb a tubular outlet R serves to conduct sound to a receiver of the phonograph or other instrument. The inner wall of the mouth-piece is made smooth and unobstruct- 1889. Serial No- 319,899- (Nomodeh) ive to the ready delivery of the sounds, and to condense the sound as it proceeds inward to the bulb Q, and thence to the outlet R, Without confusion from nasal twang or from unnatural tone. The flow of the sound-Waves is not liable to be broken by hissing sounds, as from s or a sounds, or bybacklash, by echo and re-echo. I thus secureapure ornatural tone, in which the nose acts or performs consonant with the other vocal organs.
I claim 1. For use in all talking machines or instruments, a mouthpiece in which is constructed a main cavity M, coalescent or conformed to another cavity N, one over the other, bya smooth interior united at the central bulb Q and communicating at the tubular aperture B, so as to conduct sounds therethrough, substantially as set forth.
2. A mouth-piece having the bulb Q, the cavity N, and the cavity M, arranged superior to the basal cavity N, and united to it near the bulb Q, and adapted to be confluent and avoid nasal twang in the delivery, substantially as set forth.
HENRY G. DEMMING.
