JOHN GPAY, OF IARAMUS, NEW JERSEY.
PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANOS.
ETECIEICAIION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,743, dated Novembef 2, 1886 Application filed March 4, 1886. Serial No. 198,977. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paramus, Bergen county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pedal Attachments for Pianos, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and accurate de scription.
In pianos as no'wmade the lyre, holding the pedals, is of a fixed length, holding the pedals at a fixed and unvarying distance from the,
' pable of adjustment to any desired length.
The drawings represent one form of making my improvement, in which Figure l represents a top view of the frame or box and pedals; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 3 a side view, and Fig. i a cross-section, of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
A is a box or frame made of two parts, a a. On one end, B, of the box A are placed the slides O O, secured in position by the setscrews 0 (r, and having the pedals D D hinged to their upper ends in such manner that they can be moved over, so as to rest on the top of the box or so as to rest on the side. The lower part, a, of the end B is provided with an opening, E, of such size as to allow the box to pass over the pedals of the piano and the end B to be placed against the front of the lyre.
In the interior of the box A, near the end B, is placed the frame or box F, having cut or bored therein the passages ousoekets f f of such size as to allow the posts H H to move freely therein. The posts H H have the disks g g, covered with felt or other suitable material, at their lower ends, and are held and adj usted as to their length by the screws G G, passing through the top of the box A, said screws (l G being provided with large fiat heads it h. The posts G G are prevented from turning by means of the pins 9 1, moving in the slots '/"f of the frame F.
with the slots j j.
The sides of the part c of the box A have inner pieces, J J, attached thereto, provided Through these slots and through holes in the sides Ct of box A are passed set-screws K, by means of which the height of the box can be further adjusted. There may also be attached to the sides a c the springs S, to aid in the easy adjustment of the height.
It will be seen that by means of the slides O O and the screws H H the pedals D D may be adjusted in a parallel position to the pedals of the piano. there is a third pedal, post, &c., placed in the frame or box A, between the two shown in the d rawi n gs.
I'do not intend to confinemyself to the specific details of construction as shown in the drawings; but they may be varied. For instance, the entire lower part, a, of the box A may be dispensed with, and the upper part, a, mounted on legsattached thereto by endless screws.- The essential parts of my invention are the frame with its hinged pedals and the supporting'posts capable of being adjusted to varying heights.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. An adjustable pedal attachment for pianos, consisting of a box or frame having hinged to slides attached to said box pedals, the free ends of said pedals being supported by posts moving freely in said frame, and provided with means for varying the length of said posts and of adj usting the position of said slides.
2. An adjustable pedal attachment for pianos, consisting of the box or frame A, in combination with the slide a G, pedals D, frame F, sockets f, posts G, adjustingserews H, substantially as described.
WVhere three pedals are used,
3. An adjustable pedal attachment for p'i- JOHN GRAY.
In presence of R. T. VAN BOSKEROK,
CHARLES G. Con.
