JAMES VRTGHT, OF TORRINGTON, CONNEGTICUI.
SCRAPING-TOOL.
LLECIFlC-ATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,856, dated October 12, 1886.
A pplieation tiled July 21, 1886. Serial No. 208,627. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J urns Warorrr, of Torrington, in the county of Litehfield and State of Connecticut, have invented, a new and Improved Scraping-Tool, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improved scraping-tool. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. I} is a rear elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bit-holding clamp.
The object of my invention is to provide a scraper having an adjustable bit for the use of machinists in scraping plain metal surfaces, and for all other uses to which a scraper is adapted.
My invention consists in a tapering bar secured in a handle, a clamp fitted to the tapered end of the bar. and a bit received between the bar and the clamp and held in position for use by the clamp. The bar A is provided with a tang, B, upon which is secured a handle, 0. The bar is of uniform width throughout its length, but its thickness diminishes from the end ad joining the handle.
To the bar A is titted a clamp, D, formed of a plate ofsteel, having lateral arms a bent over parallel with the body of the plate. The thinner end of the bar A is inserted between the arms a and the body of the clamp l), and a hardened and tempered scraping-bit, E, is received between the clamp and the bar. The
outer end of the body of the clamp is extended beyond the body of the arms a and curved slightly toward the bar A, the opposite end being extended and curved in like manner,
so that when the clamp is driven on the bar A, with the bit E between the clamp and the bar, the tapering bar A will cause the clamp D to be drawn tightly against the bit E as it is dri veu on the bar, thus holding the bit securely in the position of use.
By means of my improvement, bits E, made of uniform temper throughout their entire length, may be moved forward as fast as they are worn away by use or by grinding.
My improvement is equally applicable to straight or hoe shaped scrapers, and, besides the advantages secured by the adjustment of the scraper, the form and construction give a peculiar elasticity, whieh causes the scraper to work smoothly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A SOlZlPCh-llOlLlCl formed of a bar of uniform width diminished in thickness toward the end, and a clamp adapted to embrace the bar and hold the seraper-bit in the position of use, substantially as shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a scraping-tool formed of a bar, A, provided with a tang, 3, and diminished in thickness from the tang toward the opposite end, the handle 0, received on the tang, the clamp D, provided with curved ends and arms a, embracing the bar A, and the bit E, adjustably held between the clamp D and bar A, sub stantially as shown and described.
JAMES WRIGHT.
