Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM LEROHEN, OF MONTROSE, COLORADO.
SAFETY-STIRRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,144, dated October 5. 1886. Application filed July 22, 1886. Serial No. $308,738. (Xo model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W ILLTAM LERCHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Montrose and State of (lolorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SafetvSthJrups; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificzr tion.
This invention relates to improvements in safety-stirrups for riding-saddles; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Theannexed drawings, to which reference is made, full illustrate my invention. in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my satety-stirrup. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is also a perspective view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring by letter to the aeconr iianying drawings, A designates the stirrup, which con sisls of two portions, a u, hinged to one another at their lower end, as shown at b. This stirrup is provided with an upper and lower cross-bar, c d, the same being rigidly secured to the portion a, while the free ends 6 c, of which engage perforations ff formed in the upper end of the portion a, as shown. Upon these bars are sleeves g g, the former of which is secured to its bar by a screw, h, and the latter is retained in position by a pin, h, on the lower bar, thus preventing the sleeves from separatingl'rom their cross-bars.
B represents a locking-lever designed to keep the stirrup in proper position when the riders foot is therein. and should he be thrown by the animal this lever comesinto play and permits the stirrup to open and allow the foot to be readily withdrawn, and it is constructed in the following manner.
C O indicate two arms, which are curved at i, and are perforated at their upper ends to receive the top cross-bar and upon which they are pivoted. At the lower end of these bars is a roller, which revolves loosely on a cross bar, k, that connects the two ends of the arms to one another, as shown in the drawings. One of these arms C is provided with bent locking-plate Z, which engages a notch, or, in the end of the lower crossbar aforesaid, and when so engaged firmly holds the two halves or portions of the stirrup to one another; but should an accident occur and the rider to thrown from the back of an animal, his foot would come in contact with the roller on the lower end of pivoted lever, when the latter would be forced rearwardly and swing on its pivoted ends, at the same time the lockingplate would be withdrawn -l'rom engagement with the notch on the end of the lower crossbar, thus permitting the two halves or portions at a to separate and release the foot of the person. The sleeves on the crossbars serve as shoulders for the latter, and the pin on the lower bar and the screw .in the upper keep said sleeves in place when the stirrup is open. It will thus be seen that with my stirrup the rider cannot get? his foot fast therein, as the pressure on the roller instantly releases the two hinged portions and allows them to separate, at the same time it is durable, easily o 'ierated, and cheap to manufacture.
Havingl'lescribed my invention, whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a riding-stirrup, the combination with the hinged sections of the tripping-lever pro vided with the locking-plate, the eross-bar provided with the notch in said plate, adapted to engage the notch in the crossbar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The stirrup described, consisting of the twin sections a a, hinged to one another, one section having perlorations atits upper end,and the opposite section provided with the cross bars. the bar (Z being provided with the notch in, the ends ofthc bars engaging said perforations, and the sleeves rcmovably secured to these bars, as shown, the hinged or pivoted lever provided with the roller at its lower end, and with the bentlocking-plate secured to one arm thereof, and designed to engage the notch in the end of the lower cross-bar of the stirru p, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM LEROHFN.
