CASTRATlNG-INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO.350,088, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed January 28, 1886. Serial No. 189,531.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J AnEsTRULLiNcEn, of Silverton, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Castrating-Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction ot'a castratirig-instrument, consisting of a pair of shears of peculiar construction having a knife attachment, the object of the invention being to provide an instrument by which the opera tion of castra ion may be quickly performed, and the cords, veins, and arteries so crushed that they will .not bleed; and to this end the invention consists of a serrated cutting blade arranged to coact with a serrated jaw, said blade carrying a block or jaw corrugated to fit the corrugations of the main jaw; and the invention further consists of a knife of novel Construction pivotally connected to the serrated cutting-blade, all of which will be her inafter more fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accom panyiug drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of the instrument, the shears being represented as closed and the knife as extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view representing the position of the parts when the shears are opened and the knife folded back against the face of the cutting-blade of the shears, and Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the construction of the jaw.
The instrument illustrated in the drawings is made substantially in the form of a wellknown type of pruning-shears, being provided with handles A A, a cutting-blade, .B, and a curved jaw, O. The edge (I of the blade B is serrated, as is also the edge e of the jaw O, and upon the face of the blade B there is a curved. block. D, formed with serrations f, to correspond with those on the jaw G.
In operation the serrated cutting-edge of the jaw or blade B cuts off the cord and arteries above the testicle by direct torsion, the soft pulpy matter being first severed by the serrated edge of the knife, the fibers, however, not being out until the arteries are grasped and (N0 model )j held between the jaw O and block D. A continued pressure upon the handles will cause the entire severance of the fibers; but as the serrations on the jaw 0 enter the corresponding serrations on the block D the parts will be mashed and the arteries closed by the mashed material, so that all excessive hemorrhage usually following the operation of castration will be prevented; but the parts will still be left in shape to allow a thin watery substance to flow from the wound, thus preventing inflammation and swelling, and so performing the operation that the wound will quickly heal.
The knife attachment consis s of a blade, E, formed upon and projecting at right angle from a shaft, F, which is pivoted to the blade B at q. When extended, as shown in Fig. 1, the shank F rests in a slot, i, formed in the end of thejaw G, and isthereby steadied.
In operation the knifeis extended and made to cut. by drawing it through the testicle-sack, instead of bearing down upon it, thereby permitting a speedy operation and insuring a proper depth of out.
The general operation of the instrument will be so well understood by those skilled in the use of such instruments that a specific explanation will be unnecessary in this specifica tion, it being enough to say that by the use of such an instrument as has been described a horse can be castrated in about fifteen seconds without danger of the loss of the animal, and that the horse can he worked right along.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A castrating-instrument formed with handles A A, blade B, having serrated edge d, and carrying serrated-faced block D, and a jaw, 0, having a serrated edge, e, substantially as described.
2. A combination castrating instrument, consisting of a pair of shears having serrated edges 6 and d, and a knife, E, formed with a shank, F, and pivotally connected to the blade of the shears, substantially as described.
