J. O. WALLACE.
GUARD FOR GIN SAWS. No. 350,026. Patented Sept. 28, 1886.

WITNESSES UNiTnn STATES PATENT @rricn.
JOHN G. WALLACE, OF CORSIOANA, TEXAS.
GUARD FOR GIN-SAWS.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,026. dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed January 13, 1886. Serial No. 188,398. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, JOHN C. WVALLAGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Guards for Gin-Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a cotton-gin provided with my im provement, and Fig. 2 is asinlilar view show- 4 ing the breast and the ribs and guard raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both the figures.
My invent-ion has relation to cotton-gins; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a portion of the frame of the gin. B indicates the saws; O, the revolving brush, and E the breast. The ribs F, which fit between the saws, prevent the cotton from being drawn over the saws in one mass, and through which the cotton is drawn at the upper side of the sawcylinder, are connected at their upper and lower ends by means of cross-pieces G and H, and are hinged in the top of the gin-frame by the top cross-piece, G. A curved plate or guard, I, is hinged with its upper edge to the lower cross-piece of the ribs, folding inward, and the ends of this guard are guided to its proper position under the saws by guides J upon the inner sides of the side pieces of the gin frame, the guard being folded under the saws when the ribs and guard are tilted down in position as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
When it is desired to clean the saws or to raise the breast for any other purpose, the breast may be raised and the ribs may thereupon be tilted upward, carrying the guard with them, the guard folding up under the ribs. After cleaning the saws, or attending to whatever work is required about them, the ribs and guard may be let down, the guard being guided into place by the guides upon the side pieces of the frame, and the breast may be let down, when the machine is ready for work, and the only portions of the saws which will be exposed will be the portions projecting between the ribs, and these portions will be protected by the breast, so that there will be no danger of the person who attends the gin or feeds it being caught by the saws and injured, or of the saws being injured by any foreign substances coming in contact with their lower portions. In this manner all danger attending work about a gin will be removed, and, the guard may be applied to gins of any construction, being simply hinged to the lower edge of'the grate formed by the ribs, and being guided by suitable guides secured to the sides of the ginframe, which guides may be adapted to the form of the gin to which the device is applied.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesi In a cotton gin, the combination of the saws, the breast, the grate formed by the ribs and hinged at its upper edge in the frame, guides upon the inner sides of the side pieces of the gin-frame below the saws, and a curved plate or guard hinged to the lower edge of the grate formed by the ribs, folding inward, and having its edges guided by the guides so that it covers the lower portions of the saws below the lower edge of the breast, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. \VALLAGE.
