WILLIAM M. BLUME, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BRUSHING CLOTHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM M. BLUME, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Brushing Clothes, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view thereof.

This invention relates to a machine intended for brushing clothes, whereby all dust or dirt is removed therefrom in a speedy and effectual manner, and the operation of brushing articles of clothing is materially facilitated. My invention consists in the arrangement of a revolvin g brush for brushing clothes placed in a hood provided with a fan-blower in such a manner that a suction is created within said hood, and thereby all dust and dirt liberated by the brush are drawn out of the same, and carried away through the hood and its connecting-tube, and deposited at a distance from the operator. The brush is placed over a platform, consisting of a series of rollers arranged side by side in a frame which is free to be raised and adjusted, so that it can be accommodated to any thickness of cloth tobe subjected to the action of the brush.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a table or platform from which rises a standard, B, that forms a support for a hood, 0, which is of the form of a truncated cone. The upper part of the hood 0 is narrowed to form a connection with a conducting-pipe, (not here shown,) which may be arranged on it to carry away the dust. In the hood 0 I place a fan blower, b, which has its bearing in the sides of the same, and revolves as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, thereby creating a suction within the hood 0, which serves to draw or suck the dust from a brush placed beneath the same, as hereinafter described.
The table also supports a shaft, E, mounted upon standards D D, and upon the outer end of the shaft is fixed a cylindrical brush F, which I arrange directly below the mouth of the hood. The shaft E is provided with a pulley G, so that the same can be revolved by means of a belt. On the platformAare placed two parallel rails, d d, which form bearings for a series of rollers, c c, said rollers being placed side by side, the whole forming aplatform, 11, on which to place the articles during the process of brushing. Said roller-platform is placed unfastened on the platformA, so that it may be raised or lowered toward and from the brush F, to accommodate different thicknesses of articles to be brushed, which are placed on said platform. The brush F is formed on the outer end of the shaft E, projecting beyond the standard D, so as to be free and unsupported over the roller-platform, whereby the platform is unobstructed and always accessible to the operator, and the articles to be brushed can be put in place and removed without difficulty.
The rollers of the platform enable the ope-.
rator to move the articles to and fro over the platform without friction, and the roller-platform can be supported on springs, which will allow it to adjust itself automatically to the height required when pressure. is made by the hand of the operator subjecting the clothes to Witnesses:
