SANDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Ifatent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application filed December 19, 1908. Serial No. 468,284.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZEPI-IERIN PHILIP OHARPEN TIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Sanding-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sanding machines for scouring the heels of boots and shoes, and relates more particularly to a machine of this class which comprises a scouring wheel having sand paper or similar material on the surface thereof.
The machine includes means for drawing off the dust resulting from the operation of the wheel, the means including a reversible hood at the wheel, suitably connected with a blower or similar device.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and efficient sanding machine for scouring or sanding the heels of boots, shoes and the like, whereby the length of time necessary and the number of operators requisite, are decreased, and in which the parts can be adjusted so that a righthanded and a left-handed operator can use the machine equally well.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section showing a detail of the structure.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the machine is particularly useful for scouring or sanding heels in the manufacture of boots and shoes, it can also be advantageously employed for similar operations for different purposes. The sanding wheel or roll may be of any suitable type and consist preferably of iron cores having wooden or other rims upon which are mounted sheets or strips of sand paper, emery cloth or the like. These and other details of construction can be varied in accordance with special conditions and individual preference, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a frame 10 consisting of standards or uprights 11 each having a pair of supporting legs 12. The legs have feet 13 of any suitable form for mounting the machine in place upon a fioor or the ground.
The standards 11 have intermediate the top and the bottom, bearings 26 in which is journaled a shaft 27. The latter is a driving shaft and has pulleys 2S and 29, one of which is loose, so that the driving shaft 27 can be actuated from any suitable source of power, such as a steam engine, a main shaft actuated by a prime mover, and the like.
The frame intermediate the top and the bottom has a cross member 32 and at the top an arm 33. The member 32 and the arm have bearings 34C in which is journaled a shaft 35. The latter is substantially vertical. It carries a scouring wheel or roll 36, and at the lower end has a driven pulley 37, adapted to be connected by a quarter-turn belt 37 with a driving pulley 38 upon the shaft 27. A partly cylindrical hood 39 is located at the roll and is connected by means of a tube 40 with the pipe 20. At one edge the hood has a rail or guard 41. The hood 39 can be reversed or shifted, that is, changed from one side of the roll 36 to the other to adapt it for use by a left-handed or a righthanded operator.
The hood 39 may be made reversible in any suitable manner; as shown for example, herewith, it has a part 39 pivotally mounted by means of annular hub sections 40 upon a shaft35. The part 39* can be swung from one side to the other as is indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 3. It has at each edge a guard rail 41.
The scouring roll 36 has a fine sand paper surface, and it is of comparatively small diameter to serve more efliciently in removing scratches and dents from heels. The heel is pressed against the roll 36 in a substantially vertical position. The guard 41 permits the heel to be steadied against the roll in any desired position and prevents injury to the uppers of the shoes, and to the hands of the operators.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a sanding machine, a substantially vertical shaft adapted to be driven in either hood encompassing said roll and arranged to be reversed, and a tube for connecting said hood with air exhausting means, said hood 15 having a guard.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
