Abstract

5240. Jarvis, D. J. March 4. Floors and like surfaces, treating.-A machine for abrading, smoothing, or polishing floors and other surfaces comprises a frame 11 mounted on wheels 14, 15, and a motor 4 mounted on the frame and driving a pulley 2, round which passes a continuous abrading or polishing belt 1, which is brought into contact with the floor by a feltcovered drum 5, and is tensioned by a drum 6. The position of the drum 5 with relation to the floor, and the pressure of the belt on the floor, are regulated by varying the position of the frame 31 carrying the drum. The frame 31 is pivoted at 32 and connected by a link 28 with a weighted triangular frame 25, which is raised or lowered by a screwed rod 19 moved longitudinally by means of a hand-wheel 18. The rod 19 may be locked in any position by a screw 21 if a fixed cut is to be taken. The hand-wheel also serves for raising the belt out of contact with the floor if desired. The drum 6 is carried by a lever 8 attached to a shaft 9 to which is also attached the weighted lever 12 for holding the drum up to the belt. The machine may have one belt or two belts, one situated on each side.
