LOUIS B. PRAHAR AND CHARLES S. SHEPARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED BUTTON-HOOK AND CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,741, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed January 25, 1886. Serial No. 189,731. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that we, LOUIS B. PRAI-IAR and CHARLES S. SHEPARD, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have 5 invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Button Hooks and Corkscrews, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to' be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in-all the figures.
Figurel is a side elevation of a combined button-hook and corkscrew. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a part of a combined button-hookand corkscrew, showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a part of a combined button-hook and corkscrew, showing another modification. The object of this invention is to provide a combined button-hook and corkscrew constructed in such a manner that it can be readily carried in the pocket, and can be conveniently used in either capacity.
The invention consists in the combination, with the button-hook, of a hinged corkscrew, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A is a button-hook in the middle part of the handle of which is formed a bend, B. In a slot in the'bend B is pivoted the shank of a corkscrew, C, so that the said corkscrew can be turned down parallel with the handle of the button-hook or can be turned up at right angles with the said handle. The corkscrew O is kept in place when turned down by catching its point in a recess, D, formed in the but ton-hook handle near its outer end, abend, E, being made in the said part of the handle to bring the recess D into proper position for the point of the corkscrew to engage with it.
If desired, the slotted middle part of the button-hook handle can be made straight, as.
shown in Figs. 3and 4, in which case a bend, F, must be formed in the shank of the corkscrew G, to adapt the said corkscrew to be turned down parallel with the said handle; or a short stud, G, can be riveted'or otherwise secured to the handle of the button-hook A, the said stud being made of such a height that the corkscrew O can be turned down parallel with the button-hook handle.
The constructionfirst described is preferred as being neater and more pleasing to the eye. \Vith this construction the implement can be used as a button-hook with as much facility as though it had no corkscrew attachment, can be used as a corkscrew as conveniently as though the button-hook were an ordinary corkscrewhandle, and can be carried in the pocket with as much convenience as an ordinary buttonhook.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described combination imple ment, consisting of a button-hook, A, and a corkscrew, O, hinged to the said button-hook, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the implement can be conveniently carriedin the pocket and readily used in either capacity, as set forth.
Vitnesses JAMES T. GRAHAM, EDGAR TATE.
