Be it known that I, JOHN L. MAY, a citizen of the United States', residing at Martins: burg,in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of my chair.` Fig. 2- is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view.A Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is a side view, chair folded; and Fig. 6 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to adjustable invalid or folding chairs; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the clainis appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A .designates the rectangular horizontal frame of the chair-seat, the bars of which are rmly secured to the legs B, which are braced together by rounds O.
D D represent quadrantrack's having teeth a upon their concave edges. These racks are laterally arranged under the seat, being respectively secured by their upper ends to the side bars, b, of the seat-frame, and by their lower ends to the side rounds, c. The seatframe does not extend back between the upper portions of the rear legs of the chair, these legs being connected by a transverse bar, d, which is arranged at a lowerlevel, andis provided with hinges e,which are also attached to the middle portion of the lower section, E, of the chair-back. lhe upper end of the backsection E is,when in upright position, about level with the arms F of the chair.
G represents the upper back-section,the side bars, f, of which are abutted against the side bars, g, of the lower section, E, as shown, and Strong cross-bars L and 7c are provided connecting the side bars of the upperA and lower section at the joint. Inside hinges,l, connect the upper and lower sections, and the side and cross-bars of said sections when abutted against each other form a stop-joint, so that when the upper section is thrown back it is held firmly. Hooksmserve to connect the upper and lower sections at the back when necessary. The upper section may be folded forward on the arms when the chair is not required for use or is being transported. To the lower end .of the lower section is pivoted a swinging transverse pawl-plate, Z, adapted to engage both of the quadrant-racks D D at the same time. The back may be adjusted at any angle of inclination within the compass of the racksand will be held iirinly in that position; or it may be thrown entirely back on a level with the seat to form abed-bottom when the leg-rest is raised to the same level. designed to be supportedby a prop-frame,H, which is pivoted to the upper section of the back in rear, and may be folded against the same when not in use.

To the side bars, P, of theleg-rest are secured the forward ends of the quadrant-racks L L, which extend back on each side through slots or ways r r of the legs into the spacebelow the seat. Io the front legs and in front thereof is hinged a swinging pawl-plate, N, which extends transversely of the frame, and is adapted to engage the teeth of both of the quadrant-racks L L at the same time after adjustment of the leg-rest, holding the same firmly at the desired angular inclination.
To the rear portions of the side bars, o, of the seat-frame are pivoted the upper ends of arms V, which are parallel to the leg-rest, and are connected theret'b by the horizontal bars Z, which are hinged to the arms V at s, and are pivoted to the side bars of the leg-rest att. The forward ends of the low horizontal bars z project, as at o, and to these projections are pivoted the projections or armsw of the transverse foot-rest 'W, which is a broad rocking bar having lateral extensions a', which rest on the forward extensions of the horizontal bars Z, as shown.

In a chair,the combination,with the main frame, of the hinged leg-rest K,the quadrants secured thereto and working in slots of the front legs, the transverse pawl-plate hinged to the said legs to engage the quadrants,the arms V, pivoted at their upper ends to the lateral seat-beams, and the bars Z, pivoted at their outer ends to the leg-rest and hinged at their inner ends to the lower ends ofthe arms V, substantially as speciiied. l
