THOMAS MCGRATH, OF EAST TOLEDO, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,443, dated SeptemberZl, 1886.
I Application filed July 1, 1886. Serial No. 206.828. -(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be -it known that I, THoM'As MCGRATI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following 1s aspecification.
My invention relates to that class of car couplings which operate automatically to connect the cars together; and the object of my invention is to produce a coupling which shall securely hold the cars together, and which may be uncoupled and placed in readiness for autolnatic coupling without necessitating the entrance of an operator between the cars.
To the above purpose my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter dcscribed and claimed.
- In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof a pair of the couplings connected together. Fig. 3 is an end-view of one of the coupling-heads with its coupling-hook removed.
ling-head of the usual or any preferred form,
to receive a coupling link and pin, a hole, a, being formed in the head for the latter. In the top of this head is formed an open cavity, B, across which extends a rod, 1), upon which the hook G is loosely mounted, said hook having an eye, a, to receive said rod.
At one side of the rear of cavity Bis formed a vertical rib or lug, b, between which and the contiguous side wall of said cavity the rear end of hook G is confined as in a socket. The under part of the rear end of hook O is formed with a flat section, 0, which, when the hook is thrown down, rests upon the bottom of cavity B, and holds the hook 0 horizontal.
Upon the body'D of the car is mounted a double vertical roller, E, around which-pass chains F, which are attached to the upper outer part v of the hook, as shown. These chains pass each in one of the two grooves e of the pulley and extend laterally to opposite sides of the car-body, their outer ends carrying rings f and extending through staples or eyes f on the end of the car. Branch cords F lead from the outer ends of cords F to the top of the car. The draw-headsAaremounted upon sliding draw-bars in the usual orany preferred manner. It will thus be seen that the cars may be automatically coupled when the links are either horizontal or vertical, and that the couplings may be uncoupled or made ready for coupling by pulling 011 chains F or branch chains F without going between the cars. \Vhen coupled, any accident to one hook will not separate the cars, as the other linkwill remain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is
The combination of the draw-head having the cavity B onits upper side and the lug or lip b projecting forwardly from the rear side of the cavity, near one side thereof, the transverse bar b,having its ends secured in the sides of the cavity and bearing against the front of the lug I), the hook O, pivoted on the bar 1), between the lug b and the adjacent side of the cavity, the pulleys journaled above the draw-head, and the chains attached to the hook and passing around the pulleys, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MCGRATH.
