Description

(No Model.) 3 W. M. ROBINSON.
GAR GGUPLING.
No. 299,268. Y Patented May 27, 1884.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR BY vMu/m ATTORNEYS.
Unirhn TATFS ATENT \VILLIAM ROBINSON, OF NE? FRANKLIN, MISSOURI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,268, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed March 31, 1884. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. ROBIN- soN, of New Franklin, Howard county, Missouri. have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the combination, with a draw-head, of a lever pivoted at the side of the same, and having a laterally-movable coupling-pin held in the front end of the said lever, the inner end of said lever being connected by a connecting bar, with a sliding vertical bar in the draw'head. The said vertical bar is connected with a pivoted lever for moving the said bar to the front to uncouple the draw-heads.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan View of two draw-heads provided with myimproved car-coupling, one being shown in horizontal section 5 and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same.
Each draw-head A is provided with a transverse aperture for the laterally-movable coupling-pin 13, which is pivoted to the front end of a laterally-swinging lever, C, pivoted to a projection, D, on the side of the draw-head, to theinner end of which lever O a connecting-bar, E, is pivoted, to the opposite end of which the lower end of an upright bar, F, is pivoted, which upright bar passes through longitudinal slots in the top and bottom of the draw-head, and is adapted to move in its upright position in the direction of the length of the draw-head. Plates G and H, resting, respectively, against the bottom and top surfaces of the draw-head, are held on the opposite ends of the upright bar or block F. A lever, J, having one end pivoted to the projection D, is pivoted at or near its middle to the inner end of the bottom plate, H, connected with the bar or block F. An upright shaft, K, provided with a hand-wheel, L, at its upper end, is journaled on the side of the draw-head, and on its lower end a grooved pulley, M, is mounted, to which a chain or rope, N, is secured, which has its opposite end connected with the lever J. The couplingpin 13 is held by apintle, O, in the forked end ef the lever 0, which pintle passes through apertures in the outer end of the coupling-pin and through apertures in the lever G. The coupling-pin can be removed in case the cars are not to couple.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the cars are not coupled, the coupler is in the position shown in the left in Fig. 1. If the link P, which is held edgewise, is passed into the draw-head, it strikes the bar F and pushes the same inward, and by means of the connecting bar E, which is moved backward, swings the inner end of the lever G from the draw-head, and the pivot end of the lever 0 toward the draw-head, thereby pressing the coupling-pin B laterally through the side openings in-the draw-head, and thus coupling the draw-heads. If they are to be uncoupled, the bar or block F is moved to the front, thereby moving the inner end of the lever G toward the draw-head and the outer end from it, and thus withdrawing the pin.
The block F is moved by means of the lever J, which can be operated directly, or by winding the rope or chain N 011 the pulley M.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the draw-head A, of the vertical block or bar F, held to slide in the draw head in the direction of the length of the draw-head, the pivoted lever O, the laterallyunovable pin connected with the front end of the lever G, a connectingbar connecting the rear end of the lever G with the bar or block F, and means for moving the bar or block toward the front or rear of the draw-head, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A, having side openings for the coupling-pin, of the lever G, pivoted on the side of the draw head, a coupling-pin held detachably in the front end of the lever G, the sliding upright block F in the draw-head, and the connectinglever E, connecting the inner end of the lever O with the block or bar F, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the draw-head A, of the lever O, pivoted at the side of the same, the sliding upright block or bar F, the top and bottom plates, H and G, the bar E, connecting the inner end of the lever G with the bottom plate, G, the couplingpin B in the outer end of the lever O, and of means for moving the bar F in the direction of the length ofthe draw-head,substantially asherein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the draw-head A, of the pivoted lever O, the coupling-pin B, held in the front end of the said lever, the sliding bar F, the bar E, connecting the bar F with the lever O, and the lever J, pivoted on the drew-head and connected with the bar F,substantially as herein shown and described.
5, The combination, with the draw-head A, of the pivoted lever O, the coupling-pin B,
held on the front end of the same, the sliding bar F, the bar E, connecting the bar F with 15 the inner end of the lever C, the lever J, pivoted on the draw-head,and connected withthe bar F, the upright shaft K,-held in the drawhead, the pulley M on the lower end of the same, and the rope or chain N, secured on the 20 pulley H and connected with the lever J, substantially as herein shown and described.
