UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL J. SMITH, OF CANTON, OHIO ASSIGNOB OF TVVO-THIRDS TO SAMUEL A. OONKLIN AND WALTER O. WESTON, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTH ES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,410, dated September 21, 1886. Application filed April 30, 1886. Serial No. 200,612. (No model.)
. T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. SM TH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Driers and Reels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved clothes drier or reel, showing the arms extended and the reel-head attachedto a post or standard. ,Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the arms in a perpendicular position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of one of the arms.
The present invention has relation to clothes driers and reels; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the head of the reel, which may be made of iron, and is provided with the arms or ears (1. These arms or cars are formed in pairs, and are located substantially as shown in the drawings. The head A is provided with the conical-shape socket or cap B,which is for the purpose of receiving the conical cap 0, said conical cap G'being attached to the top or upper end of the post or standard b,as shown in Fig. 3. The diameter of this conical cap 0 is somewhat smaller than the diameter of the conical-shape socket B, so that the head A, together with its difi'erent parts, will rotate easily, the bearing-point being at Z, Fig. 3.
To the bottom or lower end of the socket B is attached the ring D, which may be cast or formed integral with said socket; or it may be made separate and attached in any convenient manner. This ring is provided with the notch or opening 0, which is for the purpose of allowing the ring D to be,engaged with and disengaged from a hook, E, on the post or standard. This hook E is securely attached to the post or standard I), and is so adj usted that it will embrace the ring, as shown in Figs. 1, 2,
and 3, and is for the purpose of preventing the wind from blowing the head A, together with its different parts, from the post or standard I).
The arms or ears (0 are provided upon their bottom or lower edges with the cross bars or plates (1 (1, said cross bars or platesd (1' being located substantially as shown in the drawings and are for the purpose hereinafter described. The arms F are substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and are located substantially as shown. The inner ends of the arms F are provided with the elongated slots F, for the purpose of receiving the pins 6, and at the same time permitting said arms to be moved back and forth endwise, thereby securely locking said arms in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. WVhen it is desired to have the arms in the position shown in Fig. ],the inner ends of said arms are placed as shown by the dotted line at 00, Fig. 3. WVhen it is desired to lock the arms Fin aperpendicular position, said arms are withdrawn to a point, sothat their inner ends will clear the cross-bar or'plate d,at the same time clearing the pin f from under the projection G, when said arms can be elevated in a perpendicular position and dropped downwardly, as shown at 00, Fig. 3, thereby securely locking the arms fin the positions shown in Fig. 2. The pin F is rigidly attached to the arm F, and isfor the purpose of engaging the projection G and preventing the arms Ffrom being lifted out of position when placed as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of preventing the arms F from becoming marred,t-l1e lips or extensions H are provided, which are located as shown in the drawings. The cord or rope I is attached to one-of the arms F at its inner portion, and passes through apertures in each of the other arms at or about the same distance from the head. When the cord reaches the arm to which it was originally attached,it is passed through an aperture therein, and extends along said arm a short distance, and when a sufficient space has been left between it and the preceding cord itis passed through said IOO It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement the weight of the head, together with its different parts and contents, will be held on the point Z, thereby overcoming the friction of the reel-head and permitting the reel to rotate easily.
Having now fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patentis 1. The combination, with the head A, having a socket, B, and flanges or cars a, provided with extensions G and cross-bars d d, of the adjustable arms F, having slots F and pins f, an the pins 0, substantially as described.
2. The combinati0n,with the post or stand- 15 ard b,having conical cap O,of thehead A,provided with conical socket B, havinganotched ring, D, and the hook E, engaging said ring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have 20 hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. 1
DANIEL J. SMITH.
