J. R. TO RREY.
RAZOR GUARD.
-' No. 349,287. Pafiented-Se-pL-M, 1886.
Wz/7Es'555,
H. PETERS. Phum-Lnhu m hnr. Washington D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH R. TORREY, .OF \VOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO J. R. TORREY RAZOR COMPANY; OF SAME PLACE.
RAZOR-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,287 dated September 14, 1886.
Application filed May 3, 1886. Serial No. 200,947.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH R. TORREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of W'oroester and State of Massachusetts, 11: ve invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Razor- Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to what are known as guard -razors, or razors provided with guardsto prevent the person using them from accidentally cutting himself; and the object of the invention is to form the guard and the 15 handle for the razor-blade all in one piece,
and to provide a spring-lip which overlaps the blade and serves to hold the samein place,
said lip being struck out from the same piece of sheet metal from which the guard and handle are formed.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of one form of my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the guard and the spring holding-lip are formed. Figs. 4'. .5, and 6 represent modifications of my invention.
A denotes the razor-blade, which may be provided with a small projection, a, for convenience in handling.
B is the sheet-metal guard, integral with which is the handle 0, preferably formed by bending over the metal at the top of the guard or guard-connections, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6. Struck out from the sheet-metal plate 3 5 forming the guard and handle is a spring-lip,
D, overlapping the top of the blade A, and
between which and the guard-connections I) the said blade is held. The guard-connections b are preferably provided with small bends b, which hold the guard and blade a suitable distance apart to permit the lather to pass between them when the device is in use.
To vary the position of the edge of the blade relative to the edge of the guard, ad-
5 justing-screws, as c, Fig. 1, may be inserted in holes tapped in the top of the spring-lip D,
(No model.)
and with this construction the blade may be forced downward toward the edge of the guard, the spring-lip D yielding to admit of this adjustment. 7
In the forin of my invention shown in Fig. 6 the set-screw d, by which the blade is held in place, may pass through a slot, If, in the guard-connection b, the said slot permitting the blade to be adjusted relative to the guard.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 4 the handle 0 is connected with the bottom of the guard instead of with the top, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, while in the modification shown in Fig. 5 the handle por- 63 tions 0 are bent around from the ends of the guard, and are held a convenient distance apart by the block 0, secured between them.
It will thus be obvious that the details of my invention may be varied somewhat without 6 5 departing from the essential featuresthereo f.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a razorblade, of a guard having a handle adapted to be grasped by the user in shaving, and a spring-lip over lapping the top of the said blade and serving to hold the latter in place, said guard, handle, and spring-lip being all formed from one piece of sheet metal, substantial] y as set forth.
2. A razor-guard having an. integral handle adapted to be grasped by the user in shaving, said handle extending from the top of said guard, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the razor-blade, the spring holding-lip, the guard, and the integral handle adapted to be grasped by the user in shaving, of the guard-connections provided with bends for separating the said guard and blade, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH It. TORREY.
