SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Manama. o, 1915.
Application filed-February 5, 1914. Serial No.;816,73a.
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that we, PERCY R. GREIST, a citizen of the United States, and EMANUEL BOYLER, a citizen of Canada, both residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to that class of safety razors employing flexible double,- edged blades the cutting edges of which cooperate with combs 0r guards, and in which the flexible blades may be bent by means of tively little expense, in that the parts of the device are mainly of sheet metal, so that such parts may be struck out and properly shaped at comparatively little cost. 7 In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of the improved razor. Fig. 2 is an end view. thereof, and'Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3, Fig. 1, but with a different adjustment from that shown in Fi s. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a top view with the blade and clamping plate or backing removed.
The body and the handle portions of the razor are formed of two plates 12 each of which is provided at its top with a curved head portion 13 extending outward. therefrom and constructed at its outer edge to form a comb or guard 14. Interposed between the said plates 12 is a cam plate 15 pivoted on a rivet 16 which joins the plates 12 together, and which cam is provided with a projecting operating part or handle 17. The head portions 13 of the plates '12 are curved so as to present convex upper surfaces on which the double-edged blade 18 may rest, so that the blade may be tightly held between the said convex surfaces andthe concave lower surface of a curved clamping plate 19 which will serve as a backing between the said clamping plate and the members 13.
The clamping plate or backing 19 is provided with steaclying studs 20 adapted to slightly at the lower end of pass through holes in the blade 18, and be received in recesses 21 formed in the tops of-the plates 12 and in the head portions 13 thereof. -The said clamping plate or backing is provided at its center with a lug 22 received in recesses 23 in the plates 12 and the head portions 13 thereof, the said stud having an opening 24 adapted to be entered by an eccentric hook 25 formed on the cam plate 15, so that as the said cam plate is turned the eccentric hook 25 will draw the said stud and the clamping plate or backing 1'9 downward more or less according to the position of adjustment of the said cani plate 15, and will thus cause theblade 18 to be bent or flexed more or less to vary the position of its cutting edges with relation to the guards or combs 14, for the purpose of varying the degree of closeness of cutting in the shaving operation.
One of the plates 12 is preferably upset the handle portion thereof to form a rib 26 which will engage a slightly recessed portion 27 formed at the lower end of the other plate 12,-and
as the said plates are sprung outwardly away from each other at the central portion of the handle the said plates will be held in place, to form a convenient handle, without any special means other than that afplate 15 is pivoted.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a safety razor the parts of which are mostly of sheet metal, so that they may be struck out and shaped by dies at little expense, and thus the entire razor may be made at little cost. In use the cam plate 15 will be frictionally retained in any desired position of adjustment.
Havin thus described'our invention we claim an desire .to secure by Letters'Patent:
l. A safety razor the body and handle parts of which consist of two separate plates each of which is provided with a curved head portion extending outward therefrom and formed with a comb or guard, combined with fastening means by which said plates are connected together near their head portions, a clamping plate or backing between which and the said curved head portions a blade may be clamped, and means for holding said clamping plate in place and for varying its position of adjustment.
2. A safetyrazor the body and handle forded by the rivet 16on which the cam the handle parts of the razor, and a lug on said clamping plate or handle engaged by a part of said cam plate.
In testimony whereof we aflix our s1gna l5 tures, 1n presence of two witnesses.
PERCY R. GREIST. EMANUEL J. BOYLER.
