UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIO.
HORACE LYNFORD HENRY, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE LYNFORD HENRY, residing at 2 Elmwood Place, Geneva, county of Ontario, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety razors and more specifically to a removable swinging guard for a standard pivotedly mounted razor blade, and has for its object the production of a specially shaped razor blade and a spring guard adapted to swing and be set and tightly held on either side of the cutting edge.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple guard, free of adjustments, which can be removed while the razor is being stropped.
The foregoing and other features of my invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying one sheet of drawings, forming part of this specification, in which I have represented my safety razor in its preferred form, after which I shall point out more particularly in the claims those features which I believe to be new and of my own invention.
Figure 1 is a view of my razor fitted with my razor guard in open position. Fig. 2
I shows the razor with blade and guard in closed position. Fig. 3 is an end view of my razor blade showing the bearing for the guard. Fig. 4 is a section through the tang of the razor looking toward the blade. Figs. 5 and 6 show enlarged details of the outer end of the razor blade. Fig. 7 shows a position of the guard while being removed from the blade.
In my invention I employ a wedge shaped blade 1 with a relatively thick back 2, a thin keen edge 3, nearly square front end 4, and a tang 5 by which it is pivoted to swing freely in a two-leaved handle 6 as at 7. On the other end of the handle is a spacing piece through which the leaves are riveted together at 8. Interposed between the pivot 7 and the rivet 8 I provide a stop 9 against which the tang 5 of the blade will rest when my razor'i'mbsed. On the end 1 of the blade I provide a hole or hearing 10 and a hollow or recess cam face 11 at the top thereof, as will be seen in the enlarged view, Figs.

5 and 6. The object of this cam will be fully explained later. On the tang 5, adjacent to the blade, I provide a bearing 12 with a shoulder 13 on the blade. The guard 14 is made of two pieces of metal riveted together as at 15 the heads of which are a predetermined height. The guard let is provided on one end with a pin 16 and flange 17, the former adapted to engage the hole 10 of the blade and the latter to ride on the cam surface 11. On the other end of my guard I provide a yoke 18 to engage and swing on bearing 12 on tang 5. This yoke is formed with a cam face 19 on the blade side and when it is made to swing on the bearing the high part of the cam 19 draws the flange 17 into the recess of the cam 11 thereby holding the guard tight against the blade. The rivets 15 giving the guard the proper set. By swinging the guard into the plane of the center of the cutting edge it may be removed as will be readily understood by referring to Fig. 7 this will permit the stropping of the razor.
I wish it distinctly understood that my safety razor, herein illustrated and described, is in the form in which I desire to construct it and any changes or modifications may be made without departing from the salient features of my invention and I therefore intend the following claims to cover such modifications as naturally fall within the lines of invention.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a tang razor blade in combination with guard consisting of two similar pieces riveted together, providing a yoke on one end and a pin on the other, the said rivets forming heads to give the set to the guard against the blade and means on the blade cooperating with means on the guard to automatically draw the guard set on either side of the blade when the guard is brought in close proximity to the side of the blade.
2. A safety razor comprising a two-leaved handle provided with a hinged blade having a tang; the blade provided on its outer end with a hole and sloping recess, on its inner end a bearing on its tang; in combination with a guard provided with a pin adapted to engage the hole in the blade and a shoulder adapted to ride upon the before-mena removable tioned sloping recess; a yoke adapted to en- This specification signed and witnessed gage the bearing on the tang provided With at Geneva, county of Ontario, State of New a cam face Wl11Cl1 when brought lnto engage- York, this 7th day of Feby., A. 1)., 1913.
went with the heel of the blade draws the HORACE LYNFORD HENRY. 5 shoulder into the sloping recess on the other In the presence of end of the blade, thereby holding the guard WVALTER ALTI-IOFF,
tight against the blade on either side. MINNIE I. MORGAN.
