Description

A. L. PAYAUX.
DRUM SNARE STRAINER.
No. 349,151. Patented Sept. 14, 1886 1 112.4.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIcE.
A UGUS'IUS L. FA XYAUN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRUM-SNARE STRAiNER.
FEPECXFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3&9151, dated September 1 1886.
Application filed January 30, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
so it known that I, AUGUSTUS L. FAYAUX, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofiPhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improven'ieut in Drum-Snare Strainers or Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of a drum-snare strainer or fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on an enlarged scale. Figs. 3 and 4- represent side elevations of detached parts thereof. Fig. 5 represents a section in line .U :0, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a drum-snare, which is adapted to be firmly strained on the snare-head.
It also consists of means for conveniently and quickly straining a drum-snare.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a drum; B, the snare-head, and O the hoop by which said head is held to the body.
1) represents a snare, which extends in several lengths across the snare-head, and is connected with fastenings E F. The fastening E, which is secured to the hoop 0, consists of a recessed plate having posts or rollers G, screwholes If at the end of its front portion, and openings .7 in the ends of the back portion. The fastening F consists of a recessed plate having posts or rollers K, an arm, L, to which the plate is secured, a set-screw, M, fitted to said arm, and a plate, N, to which the arm is hinged. secured to the body of the drum, the point of the screw bearing against the plate N. The lengths of the snare are passed freely and alternately around the posts G K of the respective fastcnings E F, thehoop hav ing openings l to admit of the passage of the snare, it being noticed that the ends of the snare are inserted into the openings 5 of the fastening F1 and knotted or tied to the walls thereof, whereby they are securely attached to said fastening. Thesnare, after bcingsccured at one end, is run around one of the posts of the fastening F, then around a post of the fastening l1], and again around a post of the fastening F, and so on until its other end reaches the fastening 1*], when said end is socured at the opening J.
in order to tighten the snare, the screw M Serial No. 190,3l7. (No model.)
is properly rotated, whereby as its presses against the plate N the hinged arm .L is moved outwardly, and the fastening F, and consequently the snare, follows the same, it being evident that the tension of the snare on the head may be adjusted by the operation of the screw M. As the snare is drawn out, its lengths are straightened, and they rest uniformly against the head, whereby the drum is uniformly snared, and irregularityof sound, due to inequality of straining of the snare, as heretofore occasioned, is obviated.
The adjustment of the snare is readily accomplished, as the screw M is convenient of access, and the arm L, owing to its leverage, moving quickly and powerfully.
Having thus described my invention,what1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastener for a drum-snare, consisting of a recessed plate with a post around which the snare is freely passed, substantially as described.
2. A drum-snare fastener consisting of re cessed plates with posts, a hinged arm or lever to which one of the plates is attached, and a screw fitted to said arm and bearing against the drum, substantially as described.
3. A snare-strainer having the fastener E, composed of a recessed plate having posts or rollers G and side openings, J, whereby a continuous snare may be secured thereto, all substantially as described.
4. A snare-strainer having the fastener F, composed of a recessed plate with posts or rollers K, arm L, attached to said plate and pivoted to the plate N, the plate N, and screw M, adapted to work in said arm L and against said plate N, all substantially as described.
5. A snare-strainer composed of the following parts: a recessed plate with posts or rollers in said recess and having side openings, said posts and openings being adapted to secure a continuous snare to said plate, a second recessed plate with posts therein, and having an arm pivoted to a third plate adapted to rest against the body of the drum, and a screw working in said arm and bearing against the last-mentioned plate, all substantially as described.
