CHARLES CYR, OF MUNISING, MICHIGAN.
BELT-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed May 16, 1910. Serial No. 561,622.
To all 'whom llt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CYR, a citiz en of the United States, residing at Munising, 1n the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Belt-Stretcher; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
This invention belt stretchers.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of belt stretcher by means of which the ends of a belt may be readily brought together for fastening.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted to belts of different widths.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arranges ment of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan view of my improved belt stretcher showing the same applied to the ends of a belt; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 Fig. it is a similar view on the line [1-4 of Fig. l; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the belt gripping members.
In the embodiment of the invention I provide a plurality of belt gripping members 1 which are arranged in pairs and are adjustably secured to supporting bars 2 on which they are spaced apart to the proper distance for engagement with belts of different width. The grippingl members 1 are hereshown and are preferably in the form of metal blocks having formed therethrough longitudinally disposed passages 3 by means of which they are slidably engaged with the supporting bars 2. The inner sides of the blocks 1 are cut away or recessed as shown at 4 to form a laterally projecting belt engaging lip 5 on the outer edge of which is arranged upwardly projecting belt engaging pins 6 which are adapted to coperate with the bars 2 to grip the opposite edges of the belt when engaged therewith.
The bars 2 are rabbeted on their under sides and along their opposite edges as shown at 7 and the passages 3 in the blocks relates to improvements in held by means of the pins 6 which are forced into the belt by means of set screws 8 in the Vblocks which are adapted to be screwed down -into engagement with the upper sides of the bars 2 thereby drawing the bars and lips together into rigid engagement with the edges of the belt. The belt gripping members 1 and bars 2 after being thus engaged with the opposite ends of the belt are drawn together to stretch the latter by means of a suitable mechanism which is here shown and .preferably consists of stretching bolts 9 and 10 which are connected together' at their inner ends by a right and left hand threaded turn buckle or adjusting nut 11 which is engaged with the right and left hand threaded inner ends of the bolts as shown. The outer end of one of the bolts is provided with a right hand thread while the outer portion of the other bolt is provided with a left hand thread. The right and left hand threaded outer ends of the bolts 9 and 10 are engaged with similarly threaded passages 12 formed in stretching blocks 13 arranged on the bars 2 and adjustably secured thereto by set screws 14C. The blocks 13 have formed therein transverse openings 15 which receive the bars 2 and on the lower edges of the opposite sides of said openings are formed inwardly eX- tending guide ianges 16 which are adapted to slidably engage the rabbeted edges 7 of the bars 2. By thus engaging' the blocks 13 with the bars 2 the lower sides-of the blocks will lie flush with the under side of said bars 2 and will not interfere with the belt when gripped between the bars and the gripping members of the opposite ends thereof. Uien the gripping members and bars have thus been engaged with the belt a suitable tool may be applied to the turn buckle and the bolts thus turned in the proper direction for drawing the bars 2 and gripping members l toward each other thereby stretching the belt and bringing the ends of the same together.
lof
claim.
While I have herein shown but one set of bolts and stretching devices it is obvious that I may provide two or more or' the same should it be found necessary in connection with very wide belts.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages this invention as defined in the appended Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A belt stretcher comprising gripping members adapted to be arranged on the edges of said belt at its ends, each of said members comprising a block having an undercut face to provide a belt engaging lip,
said lip having a plurality of spurs formed thereon, said block having an opening therein, bars extending through the openings in the blocks on opposite edges of the belt, set screws carried by said blocks to adjust the saine upon the ends of said bars, blocks longitudinally movable upon the bars between the gripping members, set screws to secure said blocks in their adjusted positions, said blocks each having a threadedV opening therein, and adjusting rods having threaded `ends for engagement in said openings adapted to be rotated to draw said bars and guide members toward each other whereby the belt is stretched.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
