UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDYVARD T. BRADBURY, OF MAHANOY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIE-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,717, dated September 7, 1886.
Application filed May 21, 1986. Serial No. 202,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. BRADBURY, of Mahanoy City, county of Schuylkill, and State ofPennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pie-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view. I
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective implement for grasping the plates or tins in which pics are baked for placing the piesin the oven and removing them therefrom.
My invention consists of wire tongs formed of a single piece of wire with a spiral in the middle of its length acting as a pivot to the arms of the tongs, the ends of the tongs being provided with oblong eyes for receiving the edges of the plate.
The pie-lifter is formed of a single piece of wire, A, bent into a spiral, B, in the middle of its length. The two arms of the wire extending outward from the spiral approximate- ]y parallel with each other are bent backward parallel with themselves, forming the handles 0. Beyond the spiral B, forming the joint or pivot ofthe lifter, the arms D of the wire are ofiset or bent outwardly away from each other and again bent inwardly, bringing the two arms D again approximately parallel with each other. The extremities of the wire are bent downward, then backward toward the spiral B, then upward and curved over the arms D, forming eyes E, in which are received the edges of the plate or tin, as indicated in dotted lines. The lower parts, F, of the eyes are bent inwardly toward each other and iiattened to facilitate their entrance between the plate and its support.
The pie-lifter is applied to a plate by grasping the handles 0, pressing them together, thus causing the eyes E to separate when the eyes are placed on opposite edges of the plate, and the outer ends of the handles are released, allowing the arms D to spring together, bringing the eyes E into engagement with the edges of the plate, with the lower parts, F, under the bottom of the plate.
To render the hold on the plate more secure, the handles may be grasped between the v eyes E and the coil thus adding to the press ure of the spring of the wire.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a wire formed continuously with handles and jaws, the handles having a coiled spring at their extreme outer ends, and the jaws being curved to conform to thesides of the plate or article to be lifted, and that it is not new to so dispose the jaws that the upper and lower wires thereof shall have a different radius or curvature, upon either of which may be sup ported the rim of the plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a pic-lifter formed of a wire bent into a spiral in the middle of its length, with its arms extending approximately parallel and returned approximately parallel with themselves, offset and formed into oblong eyes at their free ends, the wire at the lower part of theeyes being curved inward and flattened, substan tially as herein shown and described.
EDVARD T. BRADBURY.
