UNITED snares PATENT @FFICE.
WALTER R. KINSMAN, OF RED BANK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR-OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES E. CHAPIN, 0F MILFORD,
CONNECTICUT.
LID-LIFTER;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. KINSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Bank, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lid-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to provide a simple device that may be used by cooks or others to prevent the burnin of the hands in removing the lids of heated cooking utensils.
A further object of the invention is to provide a comparatively cheap and efficient device that may be utilized in supporting the lid in an inclined position on a table or other support, so that draining or drying of the lid may be effected and the lid prevented from rolling. And to these ends the invention consists of forming a lid lifter of a single length of wire and bending the same to provide a pair of handle portions provided at one end with jaw members and connected at their other ends by a coil spring.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a view showing my improved lid lifter adapted to use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the lifter per so. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the lifter supporting the lid on a table or other support in an inverted and inclined position.
The device is preferably formed of a sin gle length of spring wire bent to provide a handle portion 1, a spring portion 2, a gr1 ping jaw portion 3 and a foot portion 4. The jaws are located at one end of the device and are of substantially V-shape in structure, and are bent outwardly as indicated at 5, to provide a pair of abutting sides 6 so that the closing of the jaws may be limited when the device is not in use. From a point as at 7, the wire is then bent upwardly to provide a pair of oppositely disposed and substantially V-shaped handle members 9 and 10, the upper ends 11 of which are bent at right angles to sides 12 for the purpose of preventing the rolling of the lid after it has been removed from a utensil and placed on a table or other sup port, as shown in Fig. 8. After forming the handles the wire is then bent downwardly and inwardly and coiled upon itself as at 13, to provide a spring portion 14 for the purpose of normally holding the jaws in a closed position.
Adjacent the jaw members at right angles thereto, it will be noted that I have extend ed the ends of the wire outwardly to provide a pair of oppositely disposed feet members 15 which, together with the outer ends of the jaw members are designed to contact with the outer surface of the lid and hold the same in a rigid manner against wabbling after the device has been secured to the knob of the lid.
By constructing the lifter will be noted that I have provided a space between the jaws and spring to accommodate the head of the knob and that the jaws are so formed that they may grip the shank of the knob at relatively opposite points. It will be further noted that the jaws are inclined downwardly and oblique to each other and so too are the feet and the extremities of the jaws and feet are all in one plane for the purpose of permitting the device to lend itself readily to accommodate the form of knob as shown, and to more firmly grip the same and contact with the top of the lid to prevent any tendency whatsoever of the wabbling of the lid when the device is in use.
As shown in Fig. 2 the end of one of the handles may be provided with a plate 16 for the purpose of placing thereon a name or advertising matter, if desired.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A lid lifter formed of a single length of spring wire and comprising handle portions provided at one end with substantially V-shaped jaw members terminating in angularly disposed fingers and connected at their other ends by a coil spring.
as shown it 2. A lid lifter for use in connection with said feet adapted for contacting with the lids having knobs, and formed of spring top of the lid for the purpose set forth. 10 wire and comprising handle portions pro- In testimony whereof I afiix my signavided at one end with substantially cure in presence of two witnesses.
