HALTER ATTACHMENT.

SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,166, dated August 24, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

'Be it known that I, LYMAN B. KITOHEL, of Rushville, in the county of Yates,in the State of New York, have invented new-and useful Improvements in Halter Attachments, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a novel construction of metallic trimmings or attachments, which are readily applied to the straps or ropes forming the halter, and when said halt-r er is worn out said trimmings are readily removed therefrom, and may then be used on a new halter.

The invention is fully illustrated in the anneXed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of a rope halter equipped with my improved trimmings. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged detached views of the trimmings in perspective; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section on line 00 m, Fig. 3.

A represents the headstall of a halter, formed partly of rope and partly of webbing. On a halterof this or analogous class I apply my improved trimmings to the rope A, which called chin-piece of the headstall in one piece. Said trimmings consist, first, of a sleeve, a, which is split longitudinally on one side and has projecting from the opposite side a ring, 0'. Said sleeve and ring are formed in one piece of malleable iron, and the sleeve a is thus rendered expansible and contractible in circumference. On the said sleeve sleeve.

The described parts of my improved haltertrimming I apply to the rope A back of the cheek-pieces of the headstall by removing the ferrule b from the sleeve a and expanding the latter sufficiently to allow it to be slipped endwise onto the rope, and after it has been placed in its requisite position on the rope the sleeve is to be compressed to closely embrace the rope, and then the ferrule I) is slipped onto it to retain it clamped on the rope.

The other parts of my improved halter-trimmings consist of a snap-hook, h, which is formed with a'longitudinally-split and thus circumferentially expansible and contractible tubular shank, O, in one piece of malleable iron, and on the said shank slides the ferrule d. This snap-hook I attach to the end of the rope A, which forms the chin-piece of the halter. The attachment is effected by expanding the tubular shank O and slipping it onto the end of said rope, then compressing it around the rope and slipping the ferrule. (1 onto the said shank toretain it in its compressed condition. It is obvious that the ferrule must be slipped onto the rope before applying the tubular shank of the snap-hook.

Ahalter provided with my improved trimmings is readily secured to the horses head by snapping the hook h into the ring r, and thedetachment of the halter from the horse is accomplished with equal facility. It will also be observed that by removing the ferrule b from the sleeve a and slipping the latter back or. forth on the rope A the chin-piece of the halter can be adjusted in size to suit the horse, and all of the described trimmings can be removed from an old worn-out halter and applied to a new halter when desired. I do not, however, limit the application of my improved trimmings to any particular style of halter, inasmuch as it may be used on different parts of the halter and in different ways. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a halter-trimming consisting of the sleeve a, split longitudinally on one side, the ring r, projecting from the opposite side of said sleeve, and the ferrule b, sliding over said sleeve, substantially as described and shown. 2. A rope-halter attachment consisting of the sleeve a, split longitudinally, the ring 1', projecting from the side of said sleeve and formed integral therewith, the ferrule b, sliding over the sleeve a, and the snap-hook h, formed with the tubular shank 0, split longitudinally, and the ferrule d, sliding on said shank, substantially as described and shown.
