RUBBER BOOT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,653, dated August 1-7, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD SLOAN,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Torrington, in the county of Litchiield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefel Improvements in Adjustable Rubber Boot-Legs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichitappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to rubber boot-legs; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter 'described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a rubber boot, and B the leg of the boot.

The boot-leg is composed of the heavier portion or stock C, which is cut or slitted at D, so that the edges of the slit will overlap when the boot-leg is closed. To the inner faces of the edges of the slit D, I attach a web, E, of thinner or lighter rubber or other mate rial, which will lie between the overlapping edges of the slit F when the boot-leg is closed, and will open out when the boot-leg is opened, to permit the boot to be put on or removed from the foot. In attaching this web I secure Figs. 3 and one ofits longitudinal edges, as indicated at a, to the edge b of the slit in the boot-leg, the other edge of the web being secured on the opposite side of the slit at a sufficient distanee from its edge, as shown, so that the edges of the slit may overlap, as more fully shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby dispensing with a shield for the slit, as commonly practiced. A buckle, H, is used to hold the boot-leg closed. The slit extends from the top of the boot-leg down several inches, to give the hoot-leg the requisite enlargement when open.

I am aware that it is not new to slit a bootleg from the top downwardly in a vertical manner and remove from the inner portion of the leg at one side of the slit a gore-shaped piece, the edges of the slit meeting and having secured adjacent to them a fabric which is designed-t0 close and occupy the space formed by the removal of the gore,- but the edges of the slitted portion do not overlap to close the opening, and consequently a shield must be employed on the outside for this latter purpose.

I attach importance to the fact that the web E is not attached to the edges of the slit, but at a suflieient distance from one of the edges to allow the same to overlap, thereby obviating the use of an outer shield.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a boot having its leg slitted from the top downwardly, the edges of the said slit overlapping, and a fabric secured at one edge to one edge of the slit, and its oppositeedge secured some distance back of the opposite edge of the slit, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
