ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, OF SHARON, ASSIGNOR TO THEOPHILUS KING, TRUSTEE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
EYELET.
SJPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,558, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed August 10, 1895.
2"0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, of Sharon, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyelets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to eyelets which are coated at their outer ends with a plastic pyroxyline composition or its equivalent.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of eyelet whereby the plastic covering may be readily applied to and securely interlocked with the outer portion of the eyelet; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an eyelet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view showing the plastic covering applied to the flange or outer end of the eyelet. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view showing a somewhat different form of eyelet.
The same letters of reference indicate thesame parts in all the figures.
in carrying out my invention I construct an eyelet having a tubular portion or barrel a, an on twardly-inclined or frusto-conical flange a at one end of the eyelet, said flange joining the body of the eyelet at an obtuse angle 0. and spurs a formed on the upper or outer edge of the flange a and bent downwardly from said flange, so that their lower ends are substantially on a level with the angle a fdrmed by the intersection of the body a and flange a of the eyelet.
The eyelet above described is placed upon a die-plate having a cavity formed to receive the barrel or body a and fit closely the exterior of the same. The lower portion of the flange is caused by the angle at which it joins the body of the flange to rest squarely upon the die-plate, so that the downward pressure applied, as hereinafter described, to the flange in the operation of applying the head thereto will not crowd or wedge the flange into the cavity of the die-plate. The spurs a being on a level with the angle a bear upon the upper surface of the die-plate and support Serial No, 558,810 (No model.)
the upper edge of the flange during the covering operation, said spurs preventing the flange from yielding downwardly and becoming flattened against the die-plate. The spurs are preferably separated by intervals of considerable length, as shown in Fig. 1, so that portions of the edge of the flange are presented between the spurs as cutting-edges, which readily cut into the mass of covering material which is pressed downwardly upon the flange,
The covering material is preferably cutout in the form of an annular blank and is placed upon the upper edge of the flange and pressed downwardly thereupon by means of a suitable die formed to enter the body of the eyelet and tomold the plastic material into an annular covering 1) of substantially the form shown in Fig. 3. The raised cutting-edge of the flange, supported as described by the spurs a partially divides the mass of covering material, causing the outer portion of said mass to flow downwardly and inwardly and cover the outer surface of the flange, the spaces between the spurs enabling the covering material to readily find its way to all parts of the outer surface of the flange, the said material entering the spaces behind the spurs, so that the covering is interlocked with the flange not only by the overhang of the flange, but by the engagement of the covering with the spurs.
In Fig. ll show a shoulder 0. formed at the junction of the flange with the body of the eyelet, said shoulder being the equivalent of the angle a and aifording more extended support for the flange than said angle.
I claim- 1. An eyelet comprising a tubular body, a frusto-conical flange formed on one end of said body and inclined outwardly and upwardly therefrom, and a series of spurs projecting downwardly from the outer and upper edge of said flange, as set forth.
2. An eyelet comprising a tubular body, a frusto-conical flange formed on one end of said body and inclined outwardly and upwardly therefrom, a series of'spnrs projecting downwardly from the outer and upper edge of said flange, and a covering of plastic material molded upon said flange, said covering being applied to both the outer and inner sides of the flange and interlocked with the spurs;
thereof.
3. An eyelet comprisinga tubular body, and a frusto-conical flange formed on one end of the body and inclined upwardly and outwardly therefrom, said flange having supports at its lower and upper edges adapted to bear upon a die-plate, as set forth.
