SEWING-MACHINE TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,358, dated August 17, 1886,

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH LAUFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the followingis a specification, ret erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention comprises a specific construction of coupling devices, wherewith an extension leaf'can be readily attached either to one end or to the rear edge of a sewing-machine table, the details of said devices being hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the annexed drawings Figure 1 is a plan showing apair of my coupling devices applied to an end and back leaf, said leaves being detached from a sewing machine table. Fig. 2 another plan, but showing said leaves coupled to the table. Fig. 3 is a plan of the under side of the end leaf. Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of thatend of the table to which the leaf is applied. Rig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectionthrough a portion of the table and coupled leaf. Fig. 6 is an enlarged elevation of one of the keepers, a bearer being shown inserted therein and sectioned. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of said keeper, the bearer being pendent therefrom. Fig. 8 shows the manner of suspending the leaf from the table.

A represents a sewing-machine table, and B is a leaf capable of being applied to the end of the same, the under side of said leaf having bearers G O rigidly secured thereto, which bearers terminate with eyes 0 c.

D D are keepers secured to the under side of table A, each keeper being provided with a vertical slot, E, horizontal slot F, socket G, and bridge H, as more clearly seen in Figs. 6 andi'.

I are screws or pins inserted in the under side of the table, for a purpose that will presently appear.

J is a secondary leaf, to be applied to the rear edge of the table, said leaf having attached to it bearers K K, provided with eyes k k.

From this description it is evident the leaf B is readily attached to the end of table A b5 simply inserting the eyes 0 0' in the horizon tal slots F of the keepers D D, and then slid ing said leaf toward said table, care being taken to slightly elevate thefree edge of the former, so as to cause said eyes to engage ovei the screws or pins I. When thus applied, these screws prevent the leaf being pulled away from the end of the table while the bridges H of the keepers sustain the weight of said leaf, as will be more readily understood by referring to Fig. 5. Furthermore, the leaf cannot shift either toward the front or back of the table, because the hearers 0 0c cupy the vertical slots E of the keepers, as seenin Fig. 6. To uncouple the leaf, its free edge is again slightly elevated to disengage the eyes 0 c from the pins I, and said leaf is pulled out until said eyes reach the position seen in Fig. 7 when the leaf may be allowed to hang from the table, as represented in Fig. 8. In this pendent position of the leaf the eyes 0 c occupy the sockets G of keepers D, but when the leaf is to be bodily detached, it is advanced horizontally until said eyes pass completely through the slots F. Finally, it is evident the secondary'leaf J can be applied to the rear edge of the table in a precisely similar manner, and, if desired, the former can extend the entire length of the latter, as

suggested by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.

I claim as my invention A coupling device for sewing-machine tables, which coupling consists of the bearers C 0, having eyes 0 c, and being rigidly secured to the under side of detachable leaf B, in combination with the table A, provided on its under side with keepers D D and retaining devices I, each of said keepers being furnished with a vertical slot, E, horizontal slot F, socket G, and bridge H, said bearers being inserted in said vertical slots to prevent the leaf shifting either toward the front or rear of the table, as herein described.
