ISAAC J. SALTZER, OF PRESCOTT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,777, dated August 3, 1886. Application filed December 16, l885. Serial No. 185,845. (1X0 modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ISAAC J. SALTZER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Prescott, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a port-ion of a window-frame provided with my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, showing a slightlydiifereut manner of placing the spring; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the several parts of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to sash-fasteners or sash-holders, and it contemplates certain improvements upon the sash fastener or holder for which Letters Patent No. 297,953 were granted to me on the 29th day of April, 1884; and it consists, to that end, in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, theletterA indicates the box, which is adapted to be inserted into the face of the jamb of the window-frame in a manner similar to the box described in my former patent, having two perforated lips, 13 B, at its ends, through which the fastening-screws may pass.
0 and D are catches, one of which, 0, is provided with the outwardly-projecting handle E, by means of which the catches may be operated, the catches being formed with the wedge-shaped shoulders F and G, with which they bear against each others under sides, in the same manner as the catches in the aforesaid patent. The ends of the recess H in the box, in which the catches may be folded, are slightly converging at the inner ends, as shown at I, and have longitudinal recesses J, the inner portions of which are cut away to form rectangular apertures K, so that the outer portions of the bottoms of these recesses or grooves form wedge-shaped edges L, pointing inward. The inner ends of the catches are reduced so as to fit into the apertures at the ends of the recess in the box, and the outer sides of these reduced ends M are notched at N, so as to form hooks, which may engage the wedgeshaped edges of the apertures. reduced ends of the catches may bear within the grooves and the apertures, the sides of the grooves at the wedge-shaped edges forming guides and supports for them, preventing any lateral or untrue motion of the catches.
O is the bulged spring, which is similar to the spring used in the patent formerly referred to but I prefer to allow the ends of the spring to point outward and bear against the inner faces of the inner ends of the catches, so as to exert more power upon the said catches and force them farther out than the spring would do by having its bulged side bearing against the inner sides of the bolts or catches. The ends of the box are extended over the sides and ends of the inclined ends of the recess, as shown at P, covering the said apertured ends, and preventing any portions of the wood in the mortises in the jambs into which the boxes are inserted from interfering with the free working of the hooked ends of the catches within their apertures.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters'Patent of the United States- 1. In a sash fastener or holder, the combination of a box having. the ends of its recess slightly converging, and formed with longitudinal grooves apertured at the inner ends to form wedge-shaped edges at the outer ends of the apertures, wedge-shaped catches or bolts having reduced inner ends formed with notches in their outer sides, and inserted into the apertures with the notches upon the wedge-shaped edges, and with the sides of the grooves bearing against the sides of the reduced ends, and having their outer portions crossing each other,
and a spring bearing against the inner sides of the catches, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a sash fastener or holder, the combination, with a box having the ends of its recess apertured to form wedgeshaped edges at the outer ends of the apertures, and having the The ICO
