UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
STEPHEN C. \VILCOX, OF DUBUQUE, IOYVA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO \VALKER 8s RHEMBERG, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-WICK TUBE.
EBPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,570, dated August 3, 1886.
Serial No. 192,003. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. WILooX, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Vick Tubes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improved lampwick tube, particularly intended for use in connection with the wicks forming the subject-matter of an application of mine filed of even date herewith, and bearing the serial number 182,002; and it consists in a tube made thickest at the center and sharp at the corners, and in the combination of a wick and tube having this peculiarity of construction, whereby the circulation of the oil is lessened at the edges and increased at the center of the wick, and the capillary attraction is made greater at the latter point, and produces a flame which is thick and high at the center and thin and short at the corners, contrary to the flame produced by the ordinary ilat wick and tube.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 represents in cross-section several different forms of the wick-tube, but all of the same general construction; and Fig. 2 similarly represents several forms of the wick as used, respectively, with these tubes, and described and illustrated in the application referred to. i
The various modifications of the wick-tube embraced in Fig. 1 are, as shown in cross-section, wide at the center, with the sides tapering to the corners, where they meet and join, like unto the apex of an angle. Of these various forms, 2) denotes a wick-tube whose sides are convex from corner to corner, and which is the construction preferred by me. With such atube is to be used the wick b, which is of the same shape in cross-section as shown in Fig. 2. The sides of the tube 0 are convex at the center only, while the balance out to the corners is made concave, like the wick c, which is to be used with a tube of this construction. The sides of the tube d are concave from the center to the corners, to adapt itself to the shape of the wick d, and the sides of the tube 6 are straight, and taper regularly from the center inward and outward to the corners,
like the wick e, which is to be used with a k tube of this construction.
In combining a lamp-wick and tube, each made wider at the center than at the outer perpendicular edges, and of a corresponding shape to fit each other properly, the oil is caused to circulate more freely up through the center of the wick than up through the edges of the same, and, the burning-surface being reduced at the edges, the lame produced will be thick and high at the center and thin and short at the corners, and will be more round and even in outline than the lame produced by the ordinary combined flat wick and tube.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a solid la1npwick and a tube for the same, each made thickest at the center, sharp at the edges, and corresponding in shape throughout, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combinatiou, with a solid lamp-wick, made in cross-section thickest at the center and tapering to the edges, which are sharp, of a tube for the same, of corresponding shape and size, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with a solid lamp-wick having convex sides and sharp edges, of a wick-tube with convex sides and sharp corners, substantially as described, shown, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN O. \VILGOX.
