V CURRY 00MB. No. 346,445. Patented July 27, 1886.
PATENT OFEicE.
MILES SWEET, OE TROY, NEYV YORK.
CURRY- COMB.
GPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 346,445, dated July 27, 1886.
Application filed June 2, 1886. Serial No. 203,891. (No modclJ To ctZZ whom ifi may concern:
Be it known that 1, MILES SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to curry-combs provided with malleable end bars, a wooden handle, and a wire frame uniting the handle to said end bars.
The object of my invention is to provide a 1 curry-comb of this class with a double-wire knocker at each end, and at the same time strengthen the front comb-plate and facilitate l the retention of the fingers of a person against 1 said front comb plate. I accomplish these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which is repre sented in perspective a curry-comb construct-- ed in accordance with my invention. I
In said drawing, A represents the comb- 1 plates, of usual form. They are connected together by means of malleable iron end bars,B, provided with teats to enter perforations in l the ends of the comb-plates and be clinched or riveted therein. The end bars have also lugs b I) If, grooved substantially as shown in Patent No. 89,18 granted to me April 20, 1869. The lugs I) Z) are to retain the wire frame 0, the middle portion of which is bent upon itself and driveninto the wooden handle 5 D. The ends of said wire are bent outwardly l at the points where they issue from the lugs l b, and said bent portion is of sufficient length l to form knockers c, that protect the east end bars against breakage while the curry-comb i is rapped against walls, stones, and other unyielding substances, to shake and remove f the dust rapidly accumulating thereon While in use; but it has been found that as the frame O is made of light wire that the portion fornr 1 ing the k nockers occasionally becomes straightened in line with the adjacent portion, and
said frame became loose Within the lugs b b" r of the end bars, and the etliciency of the comb was destroyed. To obviate this defect, the end bars are provided with thelugs b,within which is placed the piece of wire 0 the ends 0* of which are bent outwardly, and while clasped by the lugs b form knockers having the same length as the knockers a, and' as they lie in close contact with the latter they strengthen them and prevent their being bent out of shape; and as the wire G" extends in front of the first comb-bar it prevents its being bent from blows or falls, and at the sametime it facilitates the retention of the fingers of a person against said front comb-plate while grasp- 1 ing the curry-comb directly above the combplates.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. As a new article ofmanufactnre, a currycomb consisting of coinb-plates, end bars secured thereto, and having, besides the lugs b b, retaining the wire frame 0 of the handle, the lugs b, retaining a wire, 0 the latter connecting the two end bars, and having its ends bent outwardly parallel with the ends of the wire frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the handle and frame of a curry-comb, its end bars, and comb-plates with a wire resting alongside of [the outer comb-plate,and havingits ends bent outwardly as knockers and secured to the end bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILES SWEET.
