' J. G. ANDERSON.
ORNAMENTAL BRICK.
No. 344,707. Patented June 29, 1886.
' WITNESSES ZJV'VEJV'TOR 21 56043 ZTQCOKZZ.
.Attorney JAMES C. ANDERSON, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS.
ORNAMENTAL BRICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344:,70'7, dated June 29, 1886.
Application filed December 12, 1885. Serial No. 185,483.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Ornamental Brick, of which the following is a specification, reference being'had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of ornamental brick, and has for its object to produce ornaments in relief on the face of bricks.
My invention consists in first forming and burning the brick in the usual manner, then placing thereon the enameling compound and attaching thereto the ornament, and finally subjecting the brick to heat of sufficient intensity to vitrify the enamel and cause the ornament to be firmly fixed to the face of the brick.
In the drawings I have shown two bricks with different styles of ornaments attached thereto, in which Figure l is aview in perspective of a brick having open fret-work. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a brick with aflower and vine secured thereto.
In carrying out my invention I take a good quality of brick, what is commonly known as face or front brick, havingsmooth, even sides, and after the same has been burned in the usual manner I apply to the face edge thereof a suitable compound that will form an enamel. This enamel compound may be of any color desired, or of any of the wellknown vitriliable compounds which will produce a good enameled surface on the brick. After the enameled surface has been applied to the brick the ornamental facings are caused to adhere to the same in any suitable manner, and the brick is then placed in seggars and subjected to a heat of sufficient intensity to vitrify the enamel and cause the ornament to adhere firmly to the brick.
In the drawings, Aindicates the main body of the brick, B the enameled surface or layer of vitrifiable material, and O the ornamental port-ion in relief secured to the enameled face, as already indicated.
The ornamental portion 0 is made of a fine (No model.)
quality of clay or other imperishable substance, clay being preferred, said ornamental portions being burned to the pottery-point either before or after being applied to the face of the brick.
In the preparation of the clay for the ornamental portions any desired coloring-matter may be used which will give the best effect as contrasted with the color of the enameled portion; or the natural clays which burn in different colors may be used; or a combina tion of clays which will produce a mottled or ornamentaleffect may be employed. In forming or molding these ornamental or facing port-ions the die-box and matrix are made to the configuration of the ornament desired; for example, the facing-piece may be in the form of a leaf or vine made to conform with the face edge of the adjacent brick and be punctured with various kinds of openings to form the design.
By the method just described I am enabled to produce brick with ornamental surfaces of different kinds-such as crenelated molding, festoons, fretwork, cheverons, quarterfoil, trefoils, scrolls, soffits, 8210., and these ornamental portions may be enameled toproduce a different color from the enamel of the main portion of the brick.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. An improvement in the art of manufacturing ornamental brick, which consists in covering the face of the brick with an enameling compound, joining thereto the ornamental portion, and then burning the same, so as to vitrify the enamel and cause the ornament to be firmlytixed thereto in relief, as set forth.
2. An ornamental brick for building purposes having an enameled surface and an ornament secured thereto in relief with a vitreous enamel, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. O. ANDERSON.
