Wachenheimer, 62 Greenbrier Drive, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15220 Filed Apr. 5, 1967, Ser. No. 628,657 Int. Cl. A44b 21/00; A47h 13/16 US. CI. 24-73 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A drapery hanger is provided with a socket portion of plastic such as nylon having an elongated aperture to receive one end of a hook member in frictional engagement.
This invention relates to drapery hangers and particularly to a rapidly removable hanger for draperies.
It is common practice in the drapery field to use metal hooks fixed to draperies by sewing the hooks onto the cloth of the draperies or onto a facing material which is in turn sewed to the draperies. This type of hanger, which is almost universally used, has many drawbacks. In the first place they tend to discolor the material of the draperies from products of corrosion, particularly if the draperies are of light colored materials and if the hooks are not removed during laundering or other cleaning operations. Additionally, such hooks, if left on the draperies, tend to snag or hang up in the material during handling particularly in coarsely woven materials, leaving an unsightly defect or blemish. In order to avoid these problems, it is virtually essential that in this prior art form of drapery hanger the threads be removed that attach the hanger and the hanger set aside immediately upon taking down the draperies and prior to any handling of the same.
I have invented a drapery hanger which eliminates these problems by providing a socket portion which may be left on the draperies and a hook which slidably engages the socket at one end and provides a hook end on the opposite end for engagement on conventional drapery traverse members.
Preferably, I provide an elongated socket member of plastic adapted to be attached to a drapery, an elongated aperture in said member forming a socket to receive one end of a hook member, a hook member having spaced apart legs forming a generally U-shape and a returned end on one of said legs parallel to said leg and in the plane of both legs, said returned end being adapted to enter into and frictionally engage said socket aperture.
Preferably the socket member is made of a plastic such as Teflon, nylon or polyethylene which has some flexibility. Annular loops are preferably formed at each end of the socket member to permit it being readily sewed to a drapery. In a preferred form of my invention I provide a slot on the outside of the socket member parallel to the aperture which engages the leg having the returned end to hold the hook means in fixed position relatively to the socket.
In the foregoing general description I have set out certain objects, purposes and advantages of my invention. Other objects, purposes and advantages of this invention will be apparent, however, from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of one form of drapery hanger according to my invention;
FIGURE 2 is an exploded isometric view of the drapery hanger of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a section on the line III-III of FIG- URE 1;
3,444,595 Patented May 20, 1969 FIGURE 4 is an isometric view of a second embodiment of drapery hanger according to my invention;
FIGURE 5 is a side elevation of the embodiment of FIGURE 4;
FIGURE 6 is an isometric view of a third embodiment of my invention; and
FIGURE 7 is a side elevation of the embodiment of FIGURE 5.
Referring to the drawings, I have illustrated a socket member 10 of elongated form made of nylon and provided with openings 11 and 12 at each end by means of which the socket member can be sewn to a drapery. An elongated passage or socket 13 is provided in the socket member, preferably open at both ends and of a diameter sufficient to receive and preferably frictionally engage the returned end 14 of one leg 15 of a U-shaped hook member 16. A groove or slot 17 on the outside of the socket member, extending parallel to the socket 13 engages the leg 15 to hold the hanger 16 in fixed position. Preferably the distance between the socket 13 and slot or groove 17 is just slightly greater than the distance between leg 15 of the hook member 16 and its parallel returned end 14 so that the socket is held between the leg and returned end under the resilient pressure of the spring thereby formed.
As will be apparent from the foregoing description the socket member is attached to a drapery 18 by stitches 19 passing through openings 11 and 12.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 4, a socket member is provided having a central body portion 30 having attached thereto at the rear edge annular rings 31 and 32 by means of pivot pins 33 which pass through the rings and into the body. The rings 31 and 32 are stitched to the drapery as in the case of openings 11 and 12 of FIGURE 1. The pins 33 permit movement of the body with respect to the ends and thereby tend to eliminate any twisting of the drapery where slight misalignment of the hook and traverse occurs. The body 30 is provided with an aperture 35 extending therethrough and a parallel slot 36 to engage a hook 16 precisely as do aperture 13 and slot or groove 17 of FIGURE 1.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGURES 6 and 7, I have provided a circular base 40 with an outstanding axial cylindrical central portion 41. The base 40 may be sewn to the drapery by stitching 42 around the periphery. An aperture or passage 43 is provided diametrically through the outstanding center portion 41 to receive one leg 44 of hook 45. An opening 46 is provided in base 40 receiving the returned end 47 of leg 44 to hold the hook in fixed position in aperture 43.
I claim:
1. A drapery hanger comprising a socket member formed of plastic material, said socket member having an elongated aperture extending therethrough, annular rings pivotally attached at each end of the socket member receiving stitching whereby said member is attached to a drapery, hook means including two substantially U-shaped hook parts, said hook parts having a common intermediate leg and the bight portion of each hook part being on opposite ends of said hook means, one leg of the hook means being received in said elongated aperture to hold said hook means in fixed position relative to said socket.
2. A drapery hanger as claimed in claim 1 wherein said socket member is provided with stop means engaging a portion of the hook means externally of the elongated aperture to prevent relative rotation of the hook means and socket member.
3. A drapery hanger comprising a socket member formed of plastic material, said socket member having an elongated aperture extending therethrough, attaching means on said member receiving stitching whereby said member is attached to a drapery, hook means including two substantially U-shaped hook parts, said hook parts having a common intermediate leg and the bight portion of each hook part being on opposite ends of said hook means, said socket member being in the form of an upstanding cylindrical member on a circular base, said base having an opening adjacent the socket member receiving the end of one leg of the hook means to hold said hook means in fixed position relative to said socket.
4. A drapery hanger as claimed in claim 3 wherein 10 said socket member is provided with stop means engaging a portion of the hook means externally of the elongated aperture to prevent relative rotation of the hook means and socket member.
