UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK A. OOONNOR, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
V EXTENSlON-BUSTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,723, dated June 15,1886.
Application filed March 13, 1886. Serial No. 195,139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK A. OOoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EXtension-Bustles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its objects to provide an extensible bustle so constructed that its size may be diminished or increased and its shape varied, so as to suit the taste or fancy of the wearer. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bustle constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a detached view of one of the ribs by which the fabric of the bustle is distended, and by which its size and shape may be modified and varied; and Fig. 3 represents detached detailed views, partly in section and partly in elevation, of portions of the bustle, showing the adjusting devices.
The letter A indicates two vertical side ribs, constructed, preferably, of flat metal springs, which are bound in vertical pockets B of the body-band Oof the bustle. The said band is formed in two parts, which are separated at their rear, the edges being provided with eyelets, through which is passed a lacing-string, D, for the purpose of adjusting the bustle to the body of the wearer.
The front of the bustle is provided with straps E and a buckle, F, by which it may be secured in position.
The body-band O is provided at suitable intervals with a series of short horizontal pockets, G, in which set the ends of the distending-ribs H. These are constructed of flat metallic springs, which are preferably covered with a suitable fabric. The said ribs are perforated at intervals, and are provided with eyelets I near each end, by means of which they may be adj ustably secured to the side ribs before mentioned, which are also perforated, the respective ribs being mutually fastened by means'of the detachable fasteners K. These may be of any description, but for economy preferably consist of the ordinary paper-fasteners in general use. To the upper rear portion of the body-band is secured a gathered skirt, L, which falls down over the distending'ribs when the bustle is in lace.
The horizontal pockets before mentioned are of such length as to permit the distending-ribs to be projected to a greater or less extent into the same, so as to permit the size and form of the bustle to be modified and varied at will, and the parts are held in a propcrly-adjusted position by means of the fasteners before mentioned, which are clamped in place in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, IS-
I. In a bustle, the combination, with the vertical side ribs, A, secured to the body fabric of the bustle, of the adjustable distendingribs H, secured to the said vertical side ribs by detachable fastenings, and means for se' curing the bustle to the person of the wearer, as set forth.
2. In a bustle, the combination, with the body fabric 0, having horizontal pockets Gr therein, of the perforated distending-ribs H, inserted in said pockets, the vertical perforated side ribs, A, the detachable fastening devices whereby the size and shapeof the bustle may be modified, and means forsecuring the bustle to the person of the wearer, as specified;
3. In a bustle, the combination, with the fabric body thereof, consisting of two parts united at the center of the bustle by a lacingcord, of the vertical side ribs secured to the said fabric body, the horizontal and vertical ribs, the gathered skirt adapted to cover the distendingsprings, and means for attaching the bustle to the person of the wearer, as set. forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK A. OGONNOR.
Witnesses:
