BOTTLE-STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,292, dated June 8, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN O. BOUGHTON, of the city. county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved stopper for beer and other bottles, which has the advantage that it can be readily opened or closed, and in which a cap with cork lining for closing the bottle-mouth can be used; and the invention consists of a bottle-stopper formed of a cap having a slotted shank and an interior elastic lining, a bail passing transversely through the shank of the cap, a neckband having eyes for the bail and upwardlyextending cheeks, and a bottle-neck having bulging projections with inclined sides and straight lower edges, along which the cheeks of the neck-band move when closing or opening the stopper.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent a front elevation and a side elevation of my improved bottle stopper, shown in closed position. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 4 a side view showing the stopper in open position.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, A represents a bottle, the neck A of which is provided at diametrically-opposite points with bulging projections a a, that are made integral with the bottle. The projections a a are arranged with inclined sides and straight lower edges, as shown in Fig. 2. A semicircular neck-band, B, has eyes I) b at the ends, and is attached by a fastening-wire, b, passing around the eyes tightly to the neck of the bottle. The neck-band B is provided at the ends with upwardly-projecting cheeks if, having rounded-off corners, so as to pass readily along the inclined sides of the bulging projections of the bottle-neck. A U-shaped bail, G, is pivoted by its inwardlybent lower ends to the eyes b b of the neckband C, and passed by its upper transverse part through the slotted shank d of a cupshaped cap, D, which is provided with an interior elastic lining, D, that is preferably made of a disk of cork. Above the transverse part of the bail G is inserted in the slotted shank of the cap D, a piece of rubber, d, that acts as an elastic cushion and holds the bail in position in the transverse groove d of the cap, so as to prevent the wabbling and rattling of the same.

The stopper is closed by taking hold of the bail and turning the latter, together with the neck-band and cap on the bottle-neck, so that the checks of the neck-band pass along the inclined sides of the bulging projections until they arrive at the straight lower parts of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cork lining is thereby pressed firmly into the bot tie-mouth and closes the bottle in a tight manner. For opening the bottle the neck-band and hail are again turned on the bottle-neck in either direction until the cheeks clear the projection and the neck band abuts on the cheeks, as shown in Fig. 4. The cap is lifted sufliciently, so that it clears the bottle-mouth and can be thrown with the bail into open position at one side of the bottleneck, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.

The advantage of my improved bottle-stopper is that with the same cork can be used for the lining of the stopper, whereby the objection to rubber-stoppers, which many people have, is obviated, while at the same time the stopper can be conveniently opened and tightly closed.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of a bottle-neck having bulging projections at its sides, a neck-band having upwardly extending cheeks, a bail pivoted to said neck-band, and a cap pivoted to the bail and provided with an elastic filling, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of abottle-neck having bulging projections with inclined sides and straight lower edges, a neck band having eyes and checks with rounded-off corners, a bail pivoted to the eyes of the neck-band, and a cap pivoted to the bail and having an elastic lining, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of a neck-band having eyes, a bail pivoted to said eyes, a cap having a slotted shank, and an elastic cushion inserted into the slotted shank above the bail, so as to retain the latter on the transverse portion of the bail, substantially as set forth.
