Description

(No Model.)
-E. L. SMITH.
ADJU$TABLE BRACKET LAMP SUPPORT. No. 342,650. Patented May 25, 1886.
Zeven hr. 22632. EmmelL smiz'fi. W. a, AI- WJ UNITED STATES ATENT GFFICE.
EMMET L. SMITH, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. HIGBY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE BRACKET-LAMP SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,650, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed January 29, 1886. Serial No. 190,188.
cially designed for whatare known as bracket-lamp fixtures, by means of which the lamp 'may be adjusted vertically. horizontally, or
upon any desired angle relative to the support, which is secured to the wall.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bracket- ]amp fixture adjustableupon the securing-rod. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective of the sleeve on the securing-rod. Fig. 3is a detached perspective view of the socket which carries the lamp-bracket, showing its means of adjustment upon the sleeve. Fig. 4 is a central Vertical section through the rod, adj uslable sleeve, and adjustable socket.
In the accompanyingdrawings. Arepresents a rod, which may be round. square, or of any other desired shape, and this rod is designed to be secured to the wall by means of the brackets b and proper screws, these brackets being so constructed, as shown, as to allow the rod itself to be at such a distance from the wall to which it is secured as not to interfere with the free operation of its attachments.
O is a sleeve, fitted onto such rod and adapted to slide thereon, and provided with a setscrew, 0, by means of which such sleeve is secured in its desired position. Projecting from one side of this sleeve is the arm or stud B, which is round.
D is a socket to receive the tang of thelampbracket E, and this socket D is provided with a tube, F, projecting from one side thereof, and adapted to be sleeved upon the arm or stud B in such a manner that the lamp-bracket may be adjusted at any angle thereon, and secured therein by means of the set-screw d.
It will be seen by the construction hereinbefore described that the sleeve 0 supports (No model.)
the lamp-bracket, and that this sleeve may be adjusted to any position desired upon the rod. Now, if circumstances require that this rod be secured to the wall in a sloping position, unless there wcresome adjustability to the socket which carries the lamp bracket the latter would stand upon the same angle or inclination as the rod, while it is essential, for safety and a pleasant management of the lamp, that the latter should stand vertical, and hence the necessity of having the socket which carries the lamp-bracket adjustable upon the sleeve on the rod.
I do not desire to confine myselfto the particular means shown for adjusting the socket on the sleeve, as many ways might be adopted for this purpose, all of which would, I think, come within the scope of my present invention.
I am aware of the Patents Nos. 205,291 and 215,955, and make no claim to the constructions shown therein as forming part of my invention. I deem it important that the tube F and socket D be adjustable about the axis of the stud B, whereby the lamp can be made to stand vertical, no matter at What angle its supportingrod may be placed.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A support for a side or bracket lamp, consisting of a sleeve adjustable upon a supporting-rod and a socket to carry the lamploracket, adj ustable about its axis on said sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the supportingrod and a sleeve adj ustable thereon and provided with stud B, extending at right angles therefrom. of the tube F, provided with socket D, and sleeved on said stud and adjustable about the axis thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the supportingrod pro ided with brackets b and the sleeve 0 on said rod, and provided with set-screw c, of the stud B, formed integral with said sleeve and extending at right angles therefrom, and the socket D, having formed integral therewith the tube E, said tube being sleeved on the stud B and adjustable about the axis thereof, and provided with set-screw d, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
