INVENTOR.
WI L L IAM HENSRUDf United States Patent 3,426,481 GUIDE MECHANISM William Hensrude, Rural Route, Mekinock, N. Dak. 58258 Filed Nov. 13, 1967, Ser. No. 682,293 U.S. Cl. 49-410 Int. Cl. Ed 13/00 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Summary of the invention My invention can be used with a vertical door horizontally slidable back and forth across a jamb. The jamb has spaced apart vertical memers adjacent one surface of the door. My guide mechanism is used to hold the door against the jamb While permitting the door, at the same time, to be freely slidable as desired.
To this end, my guide includes a pulley freely rotatable in a vertical plane and secured to one of the jamb members in such manner that the pulley can be moved back and forth horizontally along a line perpendicular to the door surface. A cable is secured to the door surface at both ends in spaced apart positions on opposite sides of the pulley and a portion of the cable intermediate its ends is wound about the pulley. The pulley is spring biased away from the door surface and maintains tension on the cable.
This tension holds the door against the jamb but use of the pulley permits the door to be freely slidable as desired.
Brief description of the drawings In the drawings:
FIG. '1 is a rear view of my invention in use.
FIG. 2 is a perspective rear view of my invention; and FIG 3 is a cross sectional view of my invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments Referring now to FIGS. 1-3, there is shown a vertical door horizontally slidable back and forth past a door jamb having two horizontally spaced vertical members 12. The top of the door is connected torollers 11 riding in top horizontal rail 13.
A hollow housing is secured to one of the members 12 adjacent the rear surface of the door. Housing 15 contains a pulley 16 rotatable in a vertical plane extending at right angles to the rear surface of the door. The pulley is freely rotatable about a horizontal shaft 18. The shaft is held by a yoke 20 at one end of an elongated bar 22 which extends perpendicularly through the rear vertical plate 24 of the housing to an opposite end which has an enlarged head such as not 26. A coil spring 28 is disposed concentrically about the portion of the bar be- Patented Feb. 11, 1969 tween plate 24 and 26 to spring bias the bar, which is slidable back and forth horizontally, away from the door and thus biases the pulley away from the door. A cable 30 is wound about a vertical roller 32 freely rotatable about its own axis and about the pulley, with opposite ends of the scale being secured to the rear surface of the door in spaced apart positions which are disposed on opposite sides of the pulley. The cable is always under tension, thus holding the door against the jamb Without the need of guide rails and other conventionally used hardware.
As the door slides, the cable passes over and around the roller and pulley to guide the path of slide. A stop can be used to hold the door in open or closed position.
Bar 22 can have an enlarged shank portion shown at 32' to limit the movement of bar and pulley when the door is pulled in a direction to overcome the spring bias, thus limiting undesirable door movement and protecting the mechanism against damage.
Having thus described by invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Leters Patent:
1. A guide mechanism for a vertical door horizontally slidable back and forth across a jamb, said jamb having spaced apart vertical members adjacent one surface of the door, said mechanism comprising:
a pulley freely rotatable in a vertical plane, said pulley being movable back and forth horizontally along a line perpendicular to said door surface;
means securing said pulley to one of the vertical members; and
a cable secured at both ends to said door surface in spaced apart positions, said cable having a portion intermediate its ends which is wound about said pulley.
2. A mechanism as set forth in claim 1 provided with spring biasing means to normally bias said pulley away from said door surface and maintain tension on said cable to hold said door against said members.
3. A mechanism as set forth in claim 2 wherein said securing means is a hollow frame in which said pulley is disposed.
'4. A mechanism as set forth in claim 3 wherein said frame has a vertical plate parallel to said surface and said biasing means includes a horizontal elongated member with an enlarged head at one end and pulley coupling means at the other end, said member extending through said plate in a direction perpendicular thereto, a bias coil spring being disposed about said member and disposed between plate and head, said coupling means being disposed in the frame and connected to said pulley.
5. A mechanism as set forth in claim 4 further including a vertical roller in said frame, said cable being wound about the roller as well as the pulley.
