PATENT OFFICE.
OF PERU, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR- TO A. N. DUKES, RECEIVER, OF SAME PLACE.
SEWING-MACHINE COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,515, dated May 25. 1886.
Application filed March 4, 1886.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS A. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing` at the city of Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SewingMachine Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of'the same, reference being had lo theI annexed drawings, making a part Of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a front elevation of a sewing-machine cover embodying my in; Vention; Fig. 2, an under plan view,On an enlarged scale, showing one corner of the cover, and Fig. 3 a perspective View thereof with the base-molding removed.
The present invention has relation to that class of sewing-machine Covers constructed Of veneers glued together in the usual manner. Heretofore the sides and ends of the cover were composed wholly Of veneers, which were glued together with the grain of one veneer at right angles to that of the one adjoining, and extending around the Corners of the cover throughout its height.
It is the Object of the present invention to improve the Construction of the above-mentioned class of sewing-machine covers, wherebyincreased strength is Obtained at the corners, where most needed, and presenting a nicer and neater finish to the Cover with less liability to warp or split. These objects I attain by the construction substantially a i shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accoinpanyii'ig drawings, A repre sents the cover of" a sewing-machine, of any suitable design and finish, the sides of which are composed ofa series Of veneers, preferably three Veneers, as shown at c b c. The inner veneer, a, forms the interior sides of the cover A and the exterior Of the ends of said cover, as shown in Fig. 2.
The ends of the cover are formed of a solid piece of wood, B, preferably re-enforced and strengthened at its edges by strips e, beveled, as Shown, to form a corner, Over and upon which extend the tonguesfg h of the veneers forming the sides of the cover.
In forming the re-enforce strip c with the beveled corner the strip is only cut away a portion of its length sufficient to allow the Serial No. 194,055. (No model.)
tongues to overlap it, as shown in Fig. 3, after which angular blocks i are secured over the tongues to square up the corners ready for the molding C to be secured, the interior side of the strips e having a veneer, k, secured thereto., 'The blocks t', at the end where they are cut away to form a rounded corner, also form recesses to receive the Overlapping tongues of the veneers, so that they will. rest below the surfaces of that' portion of the blocks above said recess, in Order that the latter may be smoothed and leveled and leave the bent corners intact. This manner of constructing the veneers with overlapping tongues tO form the corners adds increased strength, and prevents the corners from splitting. and a cover of such construction enables the body tO be bent and the ends glued in at one and the saine Operation, thus facilitating the labor in manufacturing same, and allowing the glue to settle and dry rmly on all parts before the form is removed.
A molding, O, is glued around base of corners, covering and concealing the bent portion thereof, and imparting additional strength; also acting as a protection to the corners from wearing away. M
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sewing-machine cover having its sides, composed of veneers, formed with tongues which extend around the corners of the cover and overlap each other on the ends thereof, and angular blocks secured over the tongues, and moldings secured to the base Of the cover, substantially as and for-the purpose set forth.
2. A sewing-machine cover having its ends formed of a solid piece of wood veneered upon its sides` said ends being partially cut away to form a recessed corner, and the sides of the cover formed Ofveneers having tongues, which extend around said corners, and angular blocks secured over the tongues, substantially' as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS A. HULL.
