3,425,062 Patented Feb. 4, 1969 Referring now to the drawings in greater detail, the trousers 10 embodying the invention are designed to be reversed by the user and worn with either side out. The garment is constructed of fabric material 12, FIG. 4, having on opposite sides or faces two wear surfaces 14, 16 both finished for wear either =by weaving or printing. One of the wear surfaces 14, 16 may be woven, for example, in a solid color while the other, for good appearance in contrast with the first, may be printed in any desirable and appropriate pattern.
As recognized in applicants patent No. 3,234,564 reversible trousers afford many inherent advantages providing, in a sense, the convenience and utility of two garments. The suitability of such trousers to tbe reversed and worn with either side out provides the user with .a choice of color and pattern in thefvisual appearance of the fabric structure. of the garment and on occasion enables the user to appear in an apparently clean garment rather than a soiled one by the simple expedient of reversing the trousers to replace the soiled external surface with a clean one.
The trousers 10 constructed in accordance with the invention are structurally designed to provide a structural appearance which is sporty in design and style. Moreover, the garment in fashioned in such a mannerthat this structural styling of the garment, apparent to the eye, is fully preserved when the trousers are reversed, the visual style and structural appearance of the garment being virtually unchanged by reversal.
The trousers 10 illustrated have full length legs 18, 20, the lower portions of the legs being` broken away in the drawings, as previously indicated, to allow illustration of the upper Iportion of the garment on a larger scale in the drawings. It should be appreciated, however, that the trousers can have short legs while incorporating the invention.
5 The trousers 10 comprise two rear panels 22, 24, FIGS. 6, 7`, 8 and 9, disposed in juxtaposition or side-by-side relation to each other. A seat seam 26, FIGS. 8 and 9,
seams together mutually overlapping inner marginal edges of the rear panels 22, 24 along the upper portions of the rear panels to form a seat 28, FIGS. 7 and 8, of the trousers. K
Two front trouser panels 30, 32 are disposed in juxtaposition in relation to each other and in relation to said respective rear panels 22, 24 as illustrated in FIGS. l, 2, 7 and 8. A crotch seam 34, FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 8, joins the adjacent inner marginal edges of the front panels 30', 32 along medial portions of the latter to form a crotch 36 of adjacent portions of the front panels.
i Alzipper 38 with inner and outer pull tabs 40, 42 connects the inner marginal edges 44, 46 of the respective front panels 30, 32 above the crotch seam 34 and provides for opening the front of the trousers, as illustrated in FIG. 3, for either condition of trouser reversal.
Two inner leg seams 48, 50 secure the inner marginal edges 44, 46 of the respective front panels 30, 32 below the crotch seam 34 to the corresponding inner marginal edges of the respective rear panels 22, 24 as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 7.
A first pair of front pocket patches 52, 54, FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, mutually coextensive in size and shape are disposed on opposite sides of the upper portion of the front panel 30. The pocket patches 52, S4 have a generally rectangular shape modified by cutting away the upper outer corner of the respective pocket patches, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 6. Inwardly curved edges 56, 58 on the upper outer portions of the respective pocket patches 52, 54 are turned inwardly and seamed as illustrated in FIG. 6, to form seamed edges opening into front pockets to be described.
The outer marginal edges 60, 62 of the respective pocket patches `52, 54 are substantially parallel to and coterminous with the outer marginal edge 64 of the front panel 30, the marginal edges 60, 62 of the respective pocket patches overlapping opposite sides of the front panel marginal edge 64.
As previously indicated, the two pocket patches I52, 54 are mutually coextensive in size and shape and are disposed in mutually overlapping relation to each other on opposite sides of the front panel 30.
lPocket seaming 66, FIGS. 1, 2 and 7, extends through the front panel 30 and seams together through the front panel the lower marginal edges and the inner marginal edges of the two pocket patches 52, 54, as shown.
A first outer leg seam 68, FIGS. l, 2, and 7, sews together in mutually interfolded relation to each other, FIG. 5, the outer marginal edges 60, 62 of the two opposed pocket patches 52, 54, the outer marginal edge 64 of the intervening front panel 30 and the adjacent outer marginal edge 70, FIGS. 5 and 6, of the rear panel 22.
The front and back panels 30, 22 as secured together by the inner leg seam 48 and the outer leg seam 68 form the previously mentioned trouser leg 18. The opposed pocket patches 52, 54, secured to the garment by the pocket seam 66 extending through both patches and by the outer leg seam 68 extending through both patches as well as through both adjacent front and back panels, form on opposite sides of the front panel 30 two convenient and sportedly styled pockets 72, 74, FIGS. 1, 2 and 5.
The front pocket construction is duplicated on opposite front sides of the trousers. Thus, as illustrated in the drawings, a second pair of pocket patches 76, 78, formed substantially as mirror images of the pocket patches 52, 54, are disposed in mutually overlapping relation to each other on opposite sides of the upper front portion of the front panel 32. The lower and inner marginal edges of the pocket patches 76, 78 are secured together through the intervening front panel 32 by pocket seaming 80. The outer marginal edges of the pocket patches 76, 78 and the adjacent outer marginal edges of the corresponding front and rear panels 32, 24 are secured together in interfolded relation to each other 'by an outer leg seam 82, FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.
A waistband 84 is formed of two mutually overlapping pieces 86, 88 of the same fabric material 12 used in the pocket patches and trouser panels described. The lower marginal edges of said respective pieces 86, 88 of the waistband 84 overlap opposite sides of the upper marginal edges of all said panels 22, 24, 30 and 32 and upper edges of all said pocket patches y52, 54, 76 and 78. Waistband seaming 90 secures the lower marginal edge of the waistband 84 in its described overlapping relation to the upper edges of the trouser panels and front pocket patches.
Snap fastener elements 94, 96, FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, secured to opposite ends of the waistband 84 adjacent the upper extremities of the zipper 38 form releasable waistband fastening means which snap together to releasably hold opposite ends of the waistband together when the trousers are worn. The snap fasteners 94, 96 as well as the zipper 38 can be operated with equal convenience for either condition of reversal of the trousers.
As illustrated in FIG. 9, the upper portion of each rear panel 22, 24 formed in two parts for convenience in manufacture and to provide the sporty appearance desired in the trousers illustrated.
Rear pockets 98, 100, FIGS. 7 and 9, are duplicated on both sides of the trousers. Similarly, belt loops 102 on the trousers shown are duplicated on both sides of the trousers, FIG. 3.
Reinforcement of the front pockets is obtained in the construction illustrated by rivets 104 extending through the front pocket patches at opposite ends of the openings into the pockets.
The invention is claimed as follows:
