Description
- This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61/884,393 entitled “Concealed Pockets for Trousers”, filed Sep. 30, 2013, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
- The present invention is generally related to garments and more specifically to trousers with concealed pockets constructed utilizing a pocket assembly having primary and secondary pockets.
- Garment pockets can be constructed to hold various small items including (but not limited to) smart phones, keys, coins, and wallets. Typically, trousers include front and back pockets that can be placed to allow for easy access of storing and retrieving such items. Further, trouser pockets can be designed for functionality to meet the needs of an end user. For example, trousers can include watch pockets shaped and sized to fit a pocket watch or coin pockets designed to store loose coins. In today's competitive clothing market, trouser pockets can also be designed for aesthetics to add style and character to differentiate from other trousers.
- Trousers with concealed pockets constructed utilizing pocket assemblies including a primary pocket and a secondary pocket in accordance with embodiments of the invention are disclosed. In one embodiment, a pair of trousers having a concealed pocket, includes a front leg panel including a bottom edge and a pocket edge, a back leg panel connected to the front leg panel along a side seam, where the front leg panel and the back leg panel create at least a portion of one leg of the pair of trousers, a waist band that attaches to the front and back leg panels creating an opening for entering and existing the trousers, a pocket assembly, including: at least one panel of fabric stitched to form a primary pocket including an opening having a first edge and a second edge, at least one panel of fabric stitched to form a secondary pocket including an opening having a first edge and a second edge, where a first stitch attaches the first edge of the secondary pocket along at least a portion of the second edge of the primary pocket, where the pocket assembly is attached to the front leg panel by: a second stitch that attaches the second edge of the secondary pocket along at least a portion of the pocket edge of the front leg panel, a third stitch that attaches the second edge of the primary pocket along at least a portion of the pocket edge of the front leg panel, where the pocket assembly is attached to the waist band by at least one stitch, and where the pocket assembly is attached to the side seam by at least one stitch.
- In a further embodiment, a first tack attaches the second edge of the primary pocket and the second edge of the secondary pocket to the front leg panel.
- In another embodiment, a second tack attaches the second edge of the primary pocket and the second edge of the secondary pocket to the front leg panel.
- In a still further embodiment, the first and second tacks are stitched where the first and second edges of the secondary pocket meet and overlap the second edge of the primary pocket along the pocket edge of the front leg panel
- In still another embodiment, the pocket assembly is further attached to the front leg panel by a fourth stitch that attaches a portion of the second edge of the primary pocket to the pocket edge of the front leg panel.
- In a yet further embodiment, the third and fourth stitches are placed such that the second edge of the primary pocket is attached to the pocket edge of the front leg panel on both sides of the attachment between the second edge of the secondary pocket and the pocket edge of the front leg panel.
- In yet another embodiment, the pocket assembly is attached to the waist band by attaching the first edge of the primary pocket to the waist band by at least one stitch.
- In a further embodiment again, the pocket assembly is attached to the side seam by attaching the first edge of the primary pocket to the waist band by at least one stitch.
- In another embodiment again, a reinforcement panel is attached to the primary pocket by at least one stitch to reduce wear and tear to the primary pocket.
- In a further additional embodiment, the attachment of the primary pocket along the pocket edge of the front leg panel is reinforced with at least one rivet.
- In another additional embodiment, a method of constructing a pair of trousers having a concealed pocket includes constructing a pocket assembly by: stitching at least one panel of fabric to form a primary pocket including an opening having a first edge and a second edge, stitching at least one panel of fabric to form a secondary pocket including an opening having a first edge and a second edge, stitching the first edge of the secondary pocket along at least a portion of the second edge of the primary pocket using a first stitch, forming a front leg panel comprising a bottom edge and a pocket edge, forming a back leg panel that is connected to the front leg panel along a side seam, wherein the front leg panel and the back leg panel create at least a portion of one leg of the pair of trousers, forming a waist band that attaches to the front and back leg panels creating an opening for entering and existing the trousers, stitching the pocket assembly to the front leg panel by: stitching the second edge of the secondary pocket along at least a portion of the pocket edge of the front leg panel using a second stitch, stitching the second edge of the primary pocket along at least a portion of the pocket edge of the front leg panel using a third stitch, stitching the pocket assembly to the waist band by at least one stitch, and stitching the pocket assembly to the side seam by at least one stitch.

In many embodiments, a pair of trousers includes a front leg panel, a back leg panel, a waist band, and a pocket assembly having a primary pocket and a secondary pocket. The primary pocket is similar to a pocket found in conventional trousers and the secondary pocket serves as a concealed pocket that enables the storage of items, such as (but not limited to) mobile phones, separately from items contained within the primary pocket. In this way, the surface of a mobile phone contained within the secondary pocket can be protected from scratching by objects such as keys or coins contained within the primary pocket. In many embodiments, the secondary pocket is not located within the primary pocket. Instead, the secondary pocket hangs separately between the primary pocket and the front leg panel of the trousers. In several embodiments, the pocket assembly is constructed by stitching one edge of the secondary pocket opening to the front leg panel and another edge of the secondary pocket opening to the primary pocket so that the secondary pocket hangs between the interior of the front leg panel and the exterior of the primary pocket. Using this construction, no more than a portion of the opening of the primary pocket is secured to the front leg panel of the trousers. Instead, at least a portion of the opening of the primary pocket is secured to the front leg panel of the trousers via the secondary pocket. By attaching the secondary pocket to the front leg panel in this way, the presence of the secondary pocket is not clearly evident on the exterior of the trousers. In several embodiments, bar tacks can be utilized to increase the strength of the attachment of the secondary pocket and the primary pocket along the pocket edge of the front leg panel. In many embodiments, a variety of shapes and sizes of the primary and secondary pockets may be utilized in accordance with embodiments of the invention. Trousers with concealed pockets constructed utilizing pocket assemblies comprising a primary pocket and a secondary pocket in accordance with embodiments of the invention are further discussed below.
