This low pressure avoids leakage problems at the tip which could result from high cartridge pressure. It will be noted that the pressure control assembly 20 is quite compact so that it does not appreciably increase the length or width of the cartridge and does not require a large diameter barrel over that of the customary Jumbo size refill and does not require a reduction in the amount of ink held by the cartridge.
  • the assembly 20 comprises a cup-shaped adapter 22 including a generally cylindrical side wall 24, a bottom or forward. end wall 26 provided with a central port 28, and stop flange means 30 at the open end of the adapter.

  • the pressure spring may require about an 8 oz. force for its compression while the retraction spring may require only about a 6 oz. force.
  • the differential force between the retraction spring 5 and the pressure control spring is preferably between about 1 ounce and 5 ounces.
  • the pressure control assembly 20 further comprises a resilient and elastic element or means actuated by movement of the piston 50 against the biasing means 60 for expelling air from the adapter through the center port 28.
  • the resilient means is provided by a tflat circular disc or washershaped element 70 while in another embodiment (FIGS. 4 and 5), the resilient means is provided by a hollow cylindrical element 70a.
  • the washer shaped element 70 which is made of rubber or various elastomeric materials, is disposed around the upper portion of the stem 52 between the rear end of the spring 60 and the forward end of the piston 50.
  • the washer-shaped element 70- has a smaller diameter than the internal diameter of the adapter 22 to provide clearance and a passage for air.
  • the diameter of the washer-shaped element 70 is somewhat larger than that of the rear end of the receptacle portion of the pressure chamber 36 so that the element engages the seal seat 40 at the entrance to the receptacle portion and is flexed or deformed when the element is moved into the receptacle portion and contact face 38.

  • the pressure control spring 60 is stronger than the retract spring 5 so that the control spring 60 is not compressed at this time.
  • the cartridge 10 is locked in this extended position by the cam follower 7 abutting rearwardly against a forward shoulder 8 and the rear portion 54 of the movable element abutting the cam follower to prevent rearward movement of the piston 50.
  • the reservoir 12 and the adapter 22 are moved rearwardly relative to the restrained piston 50 and washer-shaped element 70.
  • the pressure chamber 36 and the upper end of the reservoir 12 being returned to a communication with ambient pressure. Subsequent applications of writing pressure will each impart a relatively low pressure surge or force to the rear of the ink supply so that pressure is automatically applied incident to the use of the pen.
  • the springs are designed to keep the cartridge vented both in retracted and projecting positions and to respond to a writing pressure of between 1 and 5 ounces to cause pressurization.
  • the annular shoulder or surface 56 provides means which prevent the piston 50 from moving too far forwardly into the adapter 22 to deform the elastic element 70 beyond its elastic limit.
  • FIGS. 4 and 5 show a modified form of the pressure control assembly 200:. Comparable elements are designated in general by the same number with an a sufiix.
  • the assembly 20a includes the cup-shaped metal adapter 22a, which has a cylindrical side wall 24a and forward end wall 26a with a central vent port 28a.
  • the adapter 22a is press fit into the rear open end of the reservoir 12 and the rear edge of the adapter is turned outwardly to provide a stop flange 30a which engages and rests upon the upper edge of reservoir.
  • the assembly 20a also includes a cylindrical piston 50a loosely fit in the adapter 22a for limited axial movement.
  • a stem 52a extends forwardly from the piston loosely through the port 28a and is provided with circumferentially spaced ears 58a to limit rearward movement of the piston 50a.
  • the piston 50a and the stem 52a are provided, in the exemplary embodiment of FIGS.
  • a movable member which also has a rear portion 54a having an annular forwardly facing shoulder 56a.
  • the shoulder 56a is at the rear end of the piston and is adapted to engage the stop flange 30a to limit forward movement of the piston 50a. This serves to protect the resilient elastic means from being deformed beyond its elastic limit.
  • the assembly 20a also includes biasing means in the form of a coiled pressure spring 60a disposed around the stern 52a between the piston 50a and the adapter 22 to urge the piston 50a relatively rearwardly.
  • the assembly 20a further includes an elastic, resilient deformable element or means in the form of a hollow cylindrical barrel or sleeve 70a of rubber or an elastomeric material.
  • the sleeve 70a is disposed generally coaxially within the adapter 50a and secured at its upper end around an enlarged cylindrical hub portion at the base of the stem 52a.
  • a pressure chamber 36a is defined within the deformable sleeve 70a.
  • the outer diameter of the sleeve 70a is approximately the same as that of the piston 50a, with the outer diameters of both being somewhat smaller than the inner diameter of the adapter to provide an air passage therebetween.
  • the parts are proportioned as shown in FIG. 4 so that there is also normally an air passage between the forward end of the sleeve 70a and the end wall 26a of the adapter.
  • a vent passage is provided between the flange 30a and the shoulder 56a, between the adapter side wall 24a and the piston 50a and sleeve 70a, between the adapter end wall 26a and the forward end of the sleeve, and through the port 28a around the stem 52a. This places the rear of the reservoir 12 in communication with the ambient atmosphere.
  • a pressure control assembly for the cartridge is compactly constructed and adapted to be relatively permanently assembled with an ink reservoir.
  • the reservoir may be of a usual or customary size and configuration and the compact assembly is such that, when it is mounted on the reservoir, the resultant cartridge is not appreciably longer or wider than a customary cartridge of that style; therefore, the cartridge may be utilized to replace a customary non-pressurizing cartridge.
  • the same ink capacity is also maintained.
  • the ink supply is normally vented to the atmosphere so that no partial vacuum results from repeated pressuring of the reservoir, which partial pressure could impair the ink flow to the writing tip.
  • Another advantage of the present invention is that pressure generated in the cartridge is kept relatively low; a Writing tip designed to operate at atmospheric pressure would tend to leak or gob around the ball when the cartridge pressure is high.
  • This invention takes advantage of the fact that the writing instrument is raised and lowered from the paper literally thousands of times while writing a single page, and at each application of the tip to the paper, a small pressure impulse is generated, tending to move the body of ink toward the tip.
  • the effect of a pressure impulse is not dissipated instantaneously upon raising of the writing tip (out of contact with the paper); the mode of operation utilizes the heretofore ignored elastic hysteresis, relaxation and elastic after effects of the elastomeric materials used, and although these effects are of a low order of magnitude, they assist in the attainment of the objects of this invention.
  • Another advantage of the invention is that the writing tip is moved or displaced only a slight amount when writing pressure is applied. This does not interfere with the use of the pen and is generally not perceptible to the user except as a slight give or cushioning effect when the pen tip is applied to the paper.
  • the tip movement which is the same as the relative movement of the resilient means to first close the reservoir from the atmosphere and then occupy a small portion of the pressure chamber, is kept small because it is not necessary (or desirable) to apply high pressure to the reservoir; thus, small movements provide the desired pressure surges.
  • a pressurizing control assembly for installation at the rear end of an ink reservoir of a writing instrument, comprising:
  • a hollow, cup-shaped adapter having side walls, a centrally ported bottom and stop flange means at the open end thereof, said adapter being arranged for installation into the open end of an ink reservoir;
  • a pressurizing control assembly as stated in claim 1, wherein the interior of said adapter is in communication with ambient air past said piston and with said bottom port when said piston is at the outward limit of its movement,
  • the elastic means is carried by the stern and said piston moves the elastic means into contact with said shoulder when said piston is moved against said biasing means.

  • a pressure control assembly attached to and extending into the open rear end of the main body portion, said assembly including a cup-shaped adapter having a centrally ported bottom, an axially movable loosely fitting piston element on the adapter and extending rearwardly therefrom, said piston being provided with a stem loosely extending through the centrally ported bottom;
  • stop means carried by the stem for cooperation with the bottom to limit outward axial movement of said stem and piston element
  • a writing instrument as stated in claim 11 wherein the resilient, elastic means comprise a washer of rubberlike material and the edge portion of said Washer is deformed by contact with said adapter to compress air when said piston is moved with respect to the cartridge by writing pressure upon the tip thereof.
  • a retractable writing instrument including a rear barrel portion carrying a manually operable projectretract mechanism, a front barrel portion having a forward opening adapted to receive the writing tip of a replaceable ink cartridge, and a retraction spring in the front barrel portion normally biasing the cartridge into a retracted position against said project-retract mechanism, the provision of:
  • a tubular cartridge of virtually uniform diameter having a writing tip of smaller diameter at its forward end in communication with a body of ink within the cartridge and an atmosphere in the rear end portion of the cartridge and rearwardly of said ink;

  • a virtually rigid member mounted for limited axial movement loosely extending through said ported wall and extending into said cartridge and having a head end extending rearwardly beyond the open end of the cartridge;
