Description
Dec. 3, 1929., R AUX 1,738,496 9 ERASER KNIFE FOR FOUNTAIN FENS Filed July 25, 1927 Patented Dec. 3, 1929 Brennan LAUX, or roivr WAYNE, INDiANA i ERASER KNIFE FOR FOUNTAIN PNS Application filed July 25,
rlhis invention relates to improvements in fountain pen caps, and has for its object to provide a cap for fountain pens having an eraser connected therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fountain pen cap having a knife eraser slidably mounted therein, and means whereby the knife may be held in fixed position closed within the cap, or extended for use.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the device shown in the accompanying illustration in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a fountain pen embracing my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged, longitudinal sectional view of a fountain pen cap embracing the invention;
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the eraser knife retracted within the cap;
Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a side view like Figure 1, showing the eraser blade projected;
Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of the catch block;
Figure 8 is an enlarged perspective view of 3,) the blade carrying block.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings inv which 1 indicates a fountain pen having a cap 2, within which cap is mounted a cylinder block 3, having a cylindrical bore 4;, extending partially therethrough. Mounted within the bore is a coil spring 5, over which seats a cylinder 6, having a head 7, and a 4.0 reduced cylindrical head 8, adapted to be projected into either the outer cylindrical aperture 10, in the side wall 11 of the cap 2,
or in the similar inner aperture 9, said apertures 9 and 1() being connected by a slot 12.
Projecting from the member 8, outwardly, is a push button 13 by means of which the member 8 may be depressed inwardly of the aperture 9, so that the cylinder 3 may be shoved forwardly and upon its reaching the extent of its forward motion the spring 5 1927. Serial No. 208,262.
will force the member 6 outwardly making the member 8 engage the slot 10, whereby the cylinder will be held iixedly in its forwardmost position. The member 8 has a reduced cylinder portion 14 which is bifurcated as at 15 to receive the inner end 16 of the eraser knife 17, the plate end 18 of which is adapted to be projected through the slot 19, of the end wall 20 of said cap 2. The end 21 of the reduced cylinder portion 14, is adapted to abut the inner surface 22 of the wall 20 and thus form a stop for the cylinder 3 when the member 8 alines over the aperture l0. By depressing the member 13, the cylinder 10 may be retracted within the cap whereby the eraser 17 is drawn within the cap, the spring 5 pressing the member 8 into the aperture 9 whereby it is held in its position as above explained.
Having described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device as described a cylindrical fountain pen cap having one end free for the reception of the end of said pen and the nib thereof, a cylinder slidable in the cap and snugly fitting the same, opposing arms on said cylinder and an eraser blade ixedly secured between said arms, said cap having a slot in its end wall through which the blade may be projected and retracted through the movement of said cylinder, a transverse bore in said cylinder, a spring mounted in said bore, a cylindrical plug having a hollow end seated in the bore and upon said spring, said plug having a reduced head slidable within a slot in the side wall of said cap, and an enlarged portion adapted to seat in enlarge ments in said side wall slot whereby the cylinder may be held in fixed projected or retracted position.
2. The combination defined in claim 1, said head and enlargement being directly over and parallel with said spring.
3. In a device as described a tubular member, a cylinder slidable within said member and snugly fitting the same, opposing arms on said cylinder and an eraser blade lixedly secured between said arms, said member having an end wall with a slot through which y a- 1e within'a slot in the side Wall of said member, and an enlarged portion adapted to seat in enlargements in said side wall slot whereby the cylinder may be held in fixed projected or retracted position.
In testimony whereo I aiix my signature. Y RICHARD LAUX.
