CLEANING TOOL.
SEEC'IFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 34:1,938, dated May 18 1886. Application filed June 2, i584. Renewed April 1. 1886. Serial No. 197,492. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LOUIS BOWEN PERKINS, of the city and county of XVorcester, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Implements for Cleaning the Centering-Holes of Shafts or Arbors; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Which Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an edge view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of an implement containing my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
It frequently occurs that the conical centering recess or hole of a shaft, arbor, or other device to be held in a turning-lathe becomes more or less choked with dirt or foreign matter, so as to require to be thoroughly cleansed before it can be properly centered oradjusted in the lathe. XVith my said implement such can be accomplished without injury to or abrading or wearing the centering-hole, as it would be liable to he were a metallic or steel scraper or tool used.
The implement shown in the aforesaid drawings is to be supposed to have its head or operative part,if not the whole of it, construct-ed or composed of a material that, when such part is forced into the centering-aperture,will yield and accommodate itself thereto, so as to lit to it closely, but still be sufficiently dense to take up and allow and cause to pass through its grooves the extraneous matter or matters to be removed by it. 7 For this purpose I make the said operating part of what is termed vulcanite, not hard, but having the requi' site elasticity. The said part or cleansinghead (shown at A) is tapering or conical, and has in its outer surface a series of grooves, a, extending from its apex to and through its base. each groove being triangular, or about so, in transverse section, and increasing in width from the apex to the base.
The part A projects from a handle or shank, B, the portion b of it, next the base of the fluted cone A, being flat and semicircular in shape, as represented. The part B may be used as a handle, or it may be inserted and fixed in a suitable handle.
From the above it will be seen that on crowding the part A into and turningitaboutwithin a centeringhole such part A will contract more or less axially and expand transversely, so as to lit the hole and remove from it by means of the grooves any dirt or extraneous matter, and finally wipe it clean without abrading or wearing it.
I claim As a newor improved article of manufacture, the centering-hole cleaning implement substantially as described, consisting of the conical elastic or yielding and grooved head, and of the shank or handle extending from the base thereof, all being essentially and for use as described.
CHARLES LOUIS BOWEN PERKINS.
